Well I just got effed on my Turkey hunt.
We were out staying with some family north of Spokane. Took my GF's daughter with me. We're hiding in the bushes w/ decoys set up calling in Turkeys, tons of gobbles and clucks all around us. We can hear a tom coming in. Closer. Closer....
Then pow, a big ass farm dog comes in and starts barking at our decoys. He doesn't notice us until she snickers at the dog, then he turns on us all growling and barking. I had to chase him off w/ bear spray yelling and screaming at him. Didn't hear any more turkeys in that spot, or any of the other spots we tried all weekend.
I did see about 30 white tails, moose prints, elk prints, blackbear and grizzly bear prints, saw a coyote... Might have seen a wolf but not sure since it was getting dark. Also saw a 'something' that was about cougar sized, but I couldn't make out the shape. Lots of critters up there.
I didn't have a lot of luck calling in turkeys even when I heard them after that first one. Was using a scratch call... Is there something I should do differently? Might have been doing a poor job calling. My basic strategy was to walk in to the bush, listen for clucks and gobbles, then set up in the bushes when I heard them and try to call the birds in.
