Logical reason there should be a spring hunt
« on: April 14, 2026, 03:59:22 PM »
Being the state actually knows that the current bear density can handle a 2 bear limit, it shouldn't take a genius to figure out they could allot a specific number of spring tags and simply make the fall season limit ONE

Ending spring bear hunts had zero to do with bear numbers and conservation. It was purely an anti-hunting play.

Don't say limit it to one though... No matter how many bears are taken in the spring two can still be taken by everybody else and one fall bear by the person who got a spring bear... There are more than enough bears in this state...

They'd give 600-800 permits when spring bear ended.
On average 100-150 permits actual harvest rate.
Spring bear was ended over a 100 bears being harvested in the spring.

It zero to do with the numbers.
Even though the commission mandate.
Maximize fishing and hunting is a law
Okay for commission to break the law ,not thou.

Only said ONE in case the bio's have some DA reason for a 2 bear limit. I hunt Oregon, WA, and ID (at times) and NE WA bear numbers are just crazy. There are a lot of sows with twins too.
Our spring bear tags in Oregon do not count against our 2 bear fall limit.

It would make more sense to have a two bear limit with OTC tags with both spring and fall season.  Buy two tags....hunt spring and fall to fill two tags.  I would bet success rates stay don't increase by any measurable amount.

It would also be nice to have baiting and hounds back so folks could be selective and only harvest the big bores or dry sows.

Often thought I'd like to ask a couple of comms if they wore masks and got vaccinated during covid.  If so, did they do it based upon what they thought was the best available science. Pretty sure their answers would be yes and if so, why don't that they use that same best available science, as presented by wdfw biologists  when they make game management decisions. Not sure how they'd explain that.

At least they got their head on their shoulders down there about bear hunting...
