Any bets on drownings this weekend?
« on: May 03, 2013, 08:31:03 AM »
I hope not, but people are so stupid....

On the way home last night, we passed a maybe 14' (but probably shorter) boat that had 6, SIX, people in it!!  Including a couple of kids  :yike:  Friggin morons had maybe 10" of freeboard, they looked like a big kayak from a distance.  I didn't see any colorful flotation on them either, doesn't mean they weren't wearing jackets, but not likely.

Be safe and enjoy the weekend.

I sure hope not, but it is a normal occurrence around here when the sun comes out, i put my money closer to memorial day weekend, almost a sure bet if that weekend is nice out..
Sunshine + Alcohol + Inner tube + River = bad things happen

To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

The rivers always seem to take a couple young people on the first really nice weekend of the year. They just don't understand that the water is really cold and moves a lot faster then it appears. It's always so tragic when a fun day in the sun turns deadly. Tell your family and friends to just stay out of the rivers for another month...go to the lake...still cold...but at least you won't be swept away! And like loki said, wear your jackets!!

I wouldn't bet against it, that's for sure. This will be the hottest weekend of the year, and rivers will be cold and running high.

The real question is... Do you think the new mandatory boaters lic will make a difference?

A man drowned in Spanaway lake today while Smossy was out there fishing. He was 55, actually had a life jacket on but it was ill fitted and he slipped out and sank to the bottom. May he RIP.

Ha! Sorry, maybe wrong terminology, didn't mean to offend anyone. Was just writing about it after hearing it on the news and knowing it happened two minutes away.

I edited it! Lol I didn't mean it that way, I meant older? Actually don't really know what I meant except to just say it was kinda trippy to hear about from our home town small lake. Especially Smossy being there when it happened, seeing that boat, then hearing about it on the news later.

That's ok. I remember when I was younger and thought 55 was "elderly." That's too bad what happened. I remember last year, I think about this same time, or maybe it was a month later, but a 16 year old boy drowned in the Chehalis River just a couple miles down the road from my house. It was a good lesson for my two little girls though. We drove by and saw all the police and firemen there looking for the body. Didn't know exactly what happened at the time but heard it on the news that evening. Now my girls remember that every time we drive by there, and I think they'll be pretty good about staying out of rivers without a life vest on when they get older.

I should be aware, I know my mom would have a fit if I called her elderly lol (she's 52 and definitely NOT elderly by any means).

Yea that's a sad way to learn a lesson but it's true. This man HAD on a life jacket so it's something to be conscience of to make sure your PFD fits you correctly.

Lol! I ACCIDENTALLY called a 55 year old man who passed away "elderly", not 45 (or 47). I apologize guys.

No, I won't bet on THAT!  Friday while my sister was here for a visit, we went up to Mill Bay Casino.  I left with more money than I had when I went in--ME, the unluckiest guy in the world....

All you guys whining about being in your 40's and 50's--Wish I was that young again!  (I'll be 68 in October)  :chuckle:

My bet is... $10.00 I will not drown this weekend.  Unless I slip and fall in the tub or my bedroom gets flooded I should be pretty high and dry.

Having a life jacket on while fishing a calm small lake and still drown.  Man that's down right horrible!
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

The man that died was actually out innertubing behind a boat. From what I heard. There was 3 on the tube - it flipped. And only two people came to the surface. The third person slipped out of his vest and wasnt seen again. Roughly 20 minutes later there was dive crews already out evacuating people from the area so they could search the bottom.

We were out on the Sound all day in the boat.  As usual, we saw a 20-21' bayliner with 14 drunk twenty somethings on it off of Hope Island.  There were a couple of other slightly bigger boats rafted off to each other in the same spot with at least 10 or more kids per boat.  I throw such a big wake that I was afraid that I was going to knock a few of them in the drink.  They were hootin and hollerin, hanging over the side, diving off the swim platform and diving on top of each other.  I was sure that by the time we got back to the boathouse in Oly that we would hear a call on the radio for help.  Stupid drunk kids.

I've done quite a bit of swift water rescue training on the stilly. Thats one snaggy river. I've lost more fishing tackle there than any other river. In fact i switched from spoons to corkeys cause that dang river started to cost me so much money.  :bash: Its sad to hear about drowning at any age because more often than not it is preventable. Be safe guys and gals. We have alot more nice weekends ahead.

Looks like two different folks drowned this weekend. One rafting the Stilly, details unknown at this time, and one tubing behind a boat, fell off the tube, and slipped out of an ill-fitting PFD.   :'(

14 year old jumps into the cold, fast flowing whatcom creek off a small, girls pool, goes to the bottom.  his friends wait 15 minutes...15 MINUTES...before they call for help.  another poor teenager out of the gene pool.

They still haven't found the Spanaway man, and now the news stories say "presumed drowning" so no idea on that one anymore. They stopped the search after 2 days and use of sonars, guess there's 5ft of silt at the bottom of the lake he could be in.
