I hooked a seal from my kayak...and more today
« on: May 03, 2013, 07:53:02 PM »
.........or so I thought :chuckle: Thanks to some other fishermen who gave me live bait (instead of dead bait that I was using), I pulled up this 4 ft. PS lingcod  :IBCOOL: It was ripping line so fast, and heading directly towards the shore (not usually what ling do in my experience), I was ready to cut the line (still thinking it was a seal). It gave me a good long fight from a kayak, and when it was time to release it, I could barely lift it out of my boat :chuckle:

I did hook up with a legal size ling afterwards

:rockin: I took a little tour of Washington  :chuckle: Only 25 lb. test line so I really got to feel the fish.
Got a nice burn though :chuckle:
My too! I am fried  :yike: :chuckle:

Whats a good setup for lings to get a good fight but not lose them?
Im going out with a fellow HW member in a few weeks and don't want to be able to just crank it up, I Wanna feel it.
Also, Whats average depth out there on the sound?
25lb Mono?
Medium Heavy 8-20lb Ugly Stick?

Sounds like a good setup. The rod I was using has the line rated from 8-17 lbs., which I really don't get  :dunno: The action is moderate  :dunno: :chuckle: I always like using as lightweight gear as possible. I had 25 lb. mono mainline with a 4 oz. keel sinker (sometimes I use a 3 oz. for feeling the extra fight, but 4 oz. is probably a better bet), and 30 lb. leader with two 5/0 octo hooks (in the sound the must be barbless). If you have 6/0 or 7/0 hooks, even better.

Average depth is probably 45-80 feet, but I was in maybe ?? I don't even have a guess  :chuckle: (40 ft. ??) We can't fish in more than 120' of water in the PS  :(

Hope you get one. Better post one on here  Oh, and the best thing about the PS is when you get one like this, you get to let it go  :chuckle: :cryriver:

I don't know if today was a bad day or a good day  :dunno: I landed two oversize lings (a 47" and a 43"[I am only guessing on the 43, but I measured the 47"]). Then I get a legal size one to the boat and the hooks come flying out just like yesterday  :cryriver: Another that gets caught in the reef, and another that snapped my mainline when I tried to stop the drag while burning the skin on my thumb at the same time  :bdid: Then to make it worse, the only other boat to pull up a ling (or even get a bite for that matter) pulls up a 30" ling........ :ACRY:

Still have to eat my baitfish tonight  :chuckle:

You guys are killing me! I wanted to go out this weekend but the kids just weren't up for it. We're staying home and jumping on the trampoline instead. I don't know how much more my back can take! :chuckle:

Was it pretty busy out there on the water? I'd like to get out in the south sound just because I don't have time to make a run to the coast right now.

I just have a cheaper one (I think I paid $300-$400? new). It is a Old Town Vapor 10 angler. The lings REALLY tow you around  :llam:

Here is the only pic I have of it (my redneck transportation 8) )......
and here is one from the internet....

Good job Kola, You have the lings dialed in. I'm going shrimping on Wed again, I'll take you with me if you show me where to catch lings. We got 282 spot prawns on Sat.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!
