I'd say elk... just a guess though.  Can't say that I've seen any horse skulls.

Its an Elk.  I found a horse skeleton up off Texas Creek road 2yrs ago. The nostril area is different on a horse, as well as the eye socket area.

I would say cow. There would be some sort of formation for the horns to attach to.  :twocents:

Pretty sure that is from a female elk.  A horse has a much bigger skull.  You'll need the bony pedicles from a male elk skull to mount some sheds on it.  Check out www.vandykestaxidermy.com  They offer three styles of shed connectors and some reproduction skulls.  You could get a skull prep kit and boil that find of yours and make some kind of display with it.  The more time you spend in elk winter range the more skulls you'll find.  I often check them to see if the ivories are still attached in the front and upper part of the mouth.  Usually someone else has been there before me.

I was looking at the skull wiht the holes in it....that's the horse skull.  The other one is an elk, as everyone has already made perfectly clear  :chuckle:

Good point about the lack of upper teeth. It must be a cow ELK.  Or could it be a moose? :dunno:

is it legal to pick up a skull in the woods even know it has no horns?
if it had horns, it's not legal to remove it from the woods.

deer, elk, moose, cows, goats, sheep, buff'ler, ALL don't have teeth on thier upper jaw....

city folks.... :chuckle:

oh, and the warden told the kids in my son's hunter ed class it wasn't legal to pick up a scull with antlers  mounted on it unless it was on your own proper-T.

It's a cow elk ;) Elk have whistler's on the top. It's part of the trophy when you harvest an elk. Always take out the whistlers.

The warden here, opened the topic up by holding up a 170 class whitetail, and asked "would you pick this up?"

Doesn't matter to me, I'd pick it up!  sooooo there! ;)
