whos running a 88-91 suburban?
« on: May 08, 2013, 10:25:24 PM »
Thinking about picking up a suburban, but not sure if that's the route I want to go or not. I love the looks of em, should be cheap to keep on the road, lots of room, only needs to tow up to 5k#.

My other thoughts were to pick up an older 1/2 ton pickup as my new hunting rig.

Anybody that runs a suburban or any SUV wanna give some + & - of them vs a truck?

My uses; camping rig, hunting rig, tow my atvs and boat (4500# loaded)

Fuel economy scares me, I figure 12 might be doable, am I close?

Budget is 5-7k. Don't want to finance anything, need at least a extended cab if its a pickup.

Well, sounds like the burb is the best bet. It will be hard to find a older chevy truck with quad cab unless you went with the 1ton 3x3.  The burbs of that era are pretty good. I believe you have a lot of parts from 73-91 to swap from. If you find a really nice older burb you can switch the front clip over to a 88-91. The early 700r4 trans had problems, so look out for that. You should be able to get a really nice burb for that price.

You could go for a ford, they have quad cabs for trucks of that era.

Mine is a touch newer.  I have a mid year 94, so I have some 95 parts and some 94.  I really like it.  I have a 1500 GMC with 285/75r/16.  I tow a 24' Prowler and a 16' utility trailer that carries the quad, tools, trailer, etc.  I get 14-16 pulling the trailer on interstate.  I get 12-13 city.  I have a 350, auto, cooler and factory trailer kit.  Mine was sed by a well drilling company before I got it.  Not rough, but used.  I went places the jeeps went last year while hunting.  Probably wont do that again.  Not enough clearance, but nice to know she had the guts to climb some hills and cross some ditches.  I don't brag about mine, but I've gotten god use from it and do like it.

I've got a 93 that I just put a new GM motor in.... I'd buy early 90's unless you are we'd to the boxier look.

I like the boxy look and the solid front axle on the early models, but things like ac and road noise while traveling has me a bit worried about them, doing some more research it seems like any burban from 88-99 would suit my budget and my needs just fine.

What really gets me is how its going to go down the road, not sure if its going to be a loud mess to where i cant even hear myself think, or if itll be tolerable. guess i gotta go look and drive some.

a pickup isnt out of the equation either, most things I need a pickup for a suburban can do just fine, im sure I can fit a couple dozen decoys in the back with plenty of room lol.

Thanks for the help so far.
