Looking for a Lab Pup
« on: June 02, 2013, 11:24:53 AM »
Not interested in papers, not going to show it, or breed it,  just a family dog that that has lost a ground to run and play. Someone to pal around the mini-farm with.

I also posted this in the classified section.

Family dogs can have hip problems, blindness,  and other genetic issues just like show or trial dogs. Those issues can cost some serious bucks to deal with.  :twocents:

I think Stilly's point is spot on.
You can get any lab and save a few bucks up front. If you get one from a reputable breeder, you can have parents certified to have clear elbow/hips/eyes/etc. (all hereditary). No guarantee those conditions will not appear, but decreases the chances tremendously. May cost a bit more upfront, but can save a ton in vet bills and heartache later.
We got our lab from a small breeder in Yelm for I think 400$ and he's certified on health and we couldn't be happier. I'll see if he's got pups soon.

If you just want a pet with lab qualities I'd seriously look at a "lab mix" and there are a ton of those around. Too many  backyard labs are bred with little thought to genetic issues. If you get a mix, at least one of the parents was smart enough and physically able to "hop the fence" :chuckle: :twocents:
