6.5 284 or 25-06

So im going to be getting a new rifle and cant quite settle on the cal. I sold my 338win but im looking at a 6.5284 savage long range hunter or a 25-06 weatherby vangaurd. The 25 is cheaper to shoot but has less long range power. Im thinking the savage will do all I want in that rifle and I can get a sweet deal on it, and I know the weatherby is sub moa with a easier to find chambering. Which do you think I should go with, it will be my all around rifle coyote-elk.

Both will do just fine ...I personally would go with the 25-06 ..It will kill anything from Rock chucks to bear and elk

I'm a 25-06 fan, but if elk and bear are on the list then I think between the two id take the 6.5, if for nothing else than the better selection  of hunting bullets available.

I really like the 25 cal but the bullets for the 6.5 seem to have way more options. The sd of the 6.5 is high too. I have been leaning toward the 6.5-284

YEAH it is a personal kinda thing ... I always was a fan of the lessor calipers ... I like flat and fast ...but like I said both will do just fine ...My buddy uses his 25-06 on bear and he never had any trouble putting them down ...

I am looking at 6.5x284 and 300wsm,  I was told if you don't reload don't consider the 6.5x284.  I was just given complete metallic reloading setup for helping someone move.  So that would be fun but, I haven't found a "deal" yet, alos looking at Savage.

I have killed elk and deer with the 6.5-06 (ballistic twin of the 284) and the 25-06. In terms of killing power.....they be about par. The 6.5 is a handloaders dream with bullet choices......given an 8 twist that is.

I have had both, my 25-06 AI shot great I loved it but the fact that I was capped at a 115 gr berger to get the B.C. i wanted is why I would go with the 6.5 I shot 140 gr bergers out of mine and it was a tack driver.. I have considered building another 6.5. I loved that gun but I built a 7 LRM instead that way I can shoot 168 gr for lighter game and the 180 gr for heavier

I bought the Savage LR/Fluted SS in 6.5x284 a few months ago. Topped it with a Zeiss Conquest 6-20 target w/mil-dot. Haven't had the time or money to build a hand load and have a custom dial built by Kenton yet but it shoots sub moa groups and steel gongs out to 435 yds with HSM/140gr Berger Hunting vld bullets just using the mil-dots. Love the accu-trigger and the rifle in general. I have both and love both but the 6.5 is far more versatile in bullet choices and a long range champ. Go with the savage in 6.5 and don't look back.

You'll love the 6.5x284. I've had both the 25-06 and the 6.5. Both were good, but the 6.5 was better. Until there are more 25cal options out there, the 6.5 will almost always be better in my eyes.

You'll love the LRH as well. They really are a great gun.

Why not a .257wby its one of my personal favorites and about the same price on out of the box ammo as 6.5/284?

Yea theres lots of long range bullets with high bc for the 6.5

The 6.5 does surpass the 25 after about 500 yds, but I is nice having a laser beam too. A 3400-3600 ish pill is not dropping much till its into the "do the math" range.

Use the same weight bullet in both and the 25-06 will not get ahead of the 6.5x284, about the case and larger dia bullet win's. A lot of people like the 100gr bullet in 25-06, if that is what you want them I'd like the 25-06 better. 12o gr is about as far as the 25-06 goes for bullet weights, the 6.5x284 is just getting started there. I have a 25-06 and a 6.5x06, wouldn't get rid of either!

Makes sense.  I thought you meant other calibers and I was curious how that weighed in on the 1 vs. the other argument.

The 25 will kill elk well at ranges to at least 400 with 100gr bullets, that I have proven to myself......course' I have seen a few fall to the 142smk at nearly twice that, but required a lot more math. It is nice to have a simple point and click hunting rifle and a turret wearing precision rifle. To accomplish both in one is a compromise every time.

If you reload the 6.5. If factory ammo, then the 20-06. The brass is cheaper for the 25 and easier to find. With the 6.5 you can go from under a 100 gr to the 160 gr bullets. If larger game is involved at times then definitely the 6.5.

For me this would be an easy decision.  I'd get the 6.5-284.  Then, I'd buy a box of 6.5-284 Lapua brass, Berger 140's, Fed 210 primers and for powder, take your pick because there are sooooooooooo many that work well.  If I was looking for 1 powder that would work for 140's as well as some of the lighter bullets, Hodgdon 4831SC would be a good choice but after you see how well the 140 Berger Hybrids shoot in a 6.5-284 you'll likely never shoot anything else and in that case I would probably use H-1000, Retumbo or maybe even try some RL33.  Any of those should get you close or into the 3100FPS range with the 140's and 100 pieces of Lapua brass will last you a veryyyyy long time.
