Couldn't wait
« on: June 13, 2013, 06:25:09 PM »
I will get better pics when the light improves, but I am so danged stoked to see another nest in the yard I can't help but to post it now. LOL
This shot is through my daughters bedroom window (closed). We have had a nest before, but it's been 5-6 yrs ago.
The cropped pic is to show the nest material.
Mossy oak/realtree could take some lessons in the art of camoflauge.
If we didn't see her land we would not have noted it. 5 feet above our deck and 10 ft from daughters window.
SO COOL!! If you can't tell........I'm excited about this.  :chuckle:

I think they have already. Saw a beak sticking up after she left a bit ago. Kinda windy/stormy here so she is sitting pretty tight. I have the camera on a tripod, ready for tomorrow. Unfortunately it is on the side of the window that does not open. I may get creative and get on the roof for a better shot.

The light is fading fast. Camera not focusing well now. I'll report back tomorrow I hope with some stellar images ;)

very cool! I just put up my first feeder the other day. within about 10 minutes I had one zip up, fly around it, and take off. I researched types of solutions and realized I had the wrong mixture for the time of year so I changed it. 10 minutes later had the same result. Work in progress I guess. I'm not a bird guy but I like hummers  :chuckle:  they are just cool customers.

This is the first year we have NOT put up feeders. We have several plants that they feed on, but no feeder. Maybe that the reduced pressure from other birds coming to the feeders make them feel more comfortable?????

I don't know if I mentioned that we had a nest in this same tree for 3-4 yrs (moutain ash) but 4-5-6 yrs ago. Could this be a relative??? I don't think that these birds live that long?

Quad that is awesome! I put out four hummer feeders and never get tired of watching them or taking pictures.

We have a resident pair that I feed year round. A few years back when it was really cold I went out to bring the feeder in so it wouldn't freeze, there was a tiny hummer froze to death on the perch of the feeder! I showed my wife so she starts crying and holds the little guy in her hands to see if she can revive it or not. After that I put a clamp on lamp out there to keep things a little warmer. Haven't had a froze one since. They're fun to watch, interesting little guys.

That is really super cool.  We have about 5 pairs of roufies and 3 or 4 pairs of black chins hanging around.  I think we now have 6 feeders out.  They are really mowing down the feed right now.  Never have been able to find any nests as they are all in the evergreens around the house.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

Man.....I feel really sorry for the little bugger in this cold-rainy weather we are having over here. I didn't see her on the nest this morning.
Got me a bit worried. Will call the wife later to see if she is back.  Don't know the status of the eggs/chicks as the nest is too high to see in.

Way cool hummers are my favorite non-game bird.
Need to put up a second feeder as they fight over my one.

Nice shot.   You could always take a glass cutter and make a lens size hole in the window.   :chuckle:

OK, just got home....She is still on the nest, but hunkered pretty low. COLD rain ALL day here
Can't imagine they are very durable in the cold, but a neighbor told me that at night and in cold weather the really downgrade their metabolism so they don't starve or freeze.

I'm gonna feel really crappy if she doesn't make it. Kinda wierd to feel that way about a bird i guess, but  :dunno:

She has 2 babies. Is protective as heck of all passing critters, but seems to trust us on the deck. Sorry about the pics, but they are through a window in my daughters bedroom. Don't want to stress her by setting up on the roof.

Let me tell you it looks painful to watch these chicks feed. Her beak is like a sewing machine needle pumping food down their gullet. Sword swallowing at its finest.

Hope you enjoy these pics

I will try to get some of them perching on the nest during "flying lessons"

Remember these things start from eggs the size of "tic-tacs"

Wish I would have climbed up and taken a pic of them.

If she is back next year I will try to get more creative with close ups (without buying a bigger lens)
We had a nest in this same tree for 3 yrs straight and then not for about 3 yrs (that we know of). Wonder if they are like salmon and find their way back home?????????

Didn't take a new picture, but the hummingbird or an offspring I guess is back on the same nest. Seems kinda early this year. We usually don't see the nest till mid may.

Little dive bombers, we have SO MANY hummingbirds out at my place but I can never get a picture of them. Very cool pics you got last year :)

Smossy was out shooting his bow in my front yard, and one dive-bombed him going after the bright arrow fletching. He was at full draw, 70 lbs and he thought he was under attack. Luckily he has good instincts and didn't just let the arrow fly as he dropped to the ground, but man.. they're aggressive little birds lol.
