Mmmm, Hummingbird eggs maybe small but they sure are tasty.  Chock full if protein too!

 :)
Feared by ducks, envied by fellow hunters and loved by dogs

Man.....I feel really sorry for the little bugger in this cold-rainy weather we are having over here. I didn't see her on the nest this morning.
Got me a bit worried. Will call the wife later to see if she is back.  Don't know the status of the eggs/chicks as the nest is too high to see in.

Way cool hummers are my favorite non-game bird.
Need to put up a second feeder as they fight over my one.

Nice shot.   You could always take a glass cutter and make a lens size hole in the window.   :chuckle:

OK, just got home....She is still on the nest, but hunkered pretty low. COLD rain ALL day here
Can't imagine they are very durable in the cold, but a neighbor told me that at night and in cold weather the really downgrade their metabolism so they don't starve or freeze.

I'm gonna feel really crappy if she doesn't make it. Kinda wierd to feel that way about a bird i guess, but  :dunno:

She has 2 babies. Is protective as heck of all passing critters, but seems to trust us on the deck. Sorry about the pics, but they are through a window in my daughters bedroom. Don't want to stress her by setting up on the roof.

Let me tell you it looks painful to watch these chicks feed. Her beak is like a sewing machine needle pumping food down their gullet. Sword swallowing at its finest.

Hope you enjoy these pics

I will try to get some of them perching on the nest during "flying lessons"

Remember these things start from eggs the size of "tic-tacs"

Wish I would have climbed up and taken a pic of them.

If she is back next year I will try to get more creative with close ups (without buying a bigger lens)
We had a nest in this same tree for 3 yrs straight and then not for about 3 yrs (that we know of). Wonder if they are like salmon and find their way back home?????????

Didn't take a new picture, but the hummingbird or an offspring I guess is back on the same nest. Seems kinda early this year. We usually don't see the nest till mid may.

Little dive bombers, we have SO MANY hummingbirds out at my place but I can never get a picture of them. Very cool pics you got last year :)

Smossy was out shooting his bow in my front yard, and one dive-bombed him going after the bright arrow fletching. He was at full draw, 70 lbs and he thought he was under attack. Luckily he has good instincts and didn't just let the arrow fly as he dropped to the ground, but man.. they're aggressive little birds lol.
