Leave your calls in your truck and find ambush locations.

I agree on finding some ambush locations, but if they can call well then I would suggest taking them. I know a few guys that were able to get good bulls to come out of the park or off private land during this hunt.

Also, if you hunt the river you will want to walk it from top to bottom and KNOW the park boundary. It is not clearly marked in all locations and not all "high water marks" are legal. I believe the park went back to a no retrieval policy so you better drop it if you are near the boundary. Don't buy into the wasting game argument. They are federal, consider the elk theirs and typically don't give a rip about hunters or F&W rules when an animal enters the park.

Know the private property boundaries for yourself. Even the long time parkies get it wrong sometimes. One year we had an old parkie tell us about a piece of "Forest Service" land that people could hunt or camp on but it was actually private land. The told a hunter he could camp there. I had permission from the land owner and boundary photos to show him and he was quite surprised.

The parkies share enforcement duties so be prepared for them to pull up and jot down your vehicle description and possibly stop by your camp.

Most of the land along the river is privately owned, about 90%.  There are a few spots closer to the park that you can access but make sure you know where the park boundaries are.  Check with the park service for boundary clarification.  Make sure the islands and gravel bars people are telling you to hunt aren't actually within the park.  Better to be safe than sorry.  Good luck

And don't hunt Big Creek island. It is private.

It is definitely a no retrieval policy, that I know.

Great tag!!!!

Spent some time in there with other permit hunters. I was never lucky enough to draw.

The river bottom is awesome.  Hope you shoot a big ole park bull!

Let's see some pictures of these bulls.......

Not to rain on anyone's parade but I have seen more bigger bulls in one day in other GMU's than I have seen my entire life in the Quinault Valley and that includes the Park (Bunches Fields).  Cool hunt but if I had the tag and couldn't get access to Big Creek I wouldn't spend any time on the river.

Cool.....do you have a picture?  Probably a good chance I have seen it on the hoof.  Don't get me wrong there are a few select bulls but I wouldnt consider it a quality hunt.  300' bulls are very, very hard to come by and if your brother shot one that is a definite trophy.

Tom, my family had a cabin at Quinault for decades and we hunted that Unit almost exclusively when I was growing up. We knew every canyon/drainage on the south shore. The trouble any more with getting off the valley floor into the high country is all the blowdown from the big storm six years ago. It ruined a lot of good hunting, but there are still pockets you can get into without having to navigate the giant pickup sticks. The packing out of the high country can be daunting, but it's doable especially if you have help. We routinely hunted a couple miles and farther back in. But we had a large group, so we'd send enough guys in to bring them out in one trip. Biggest elk I saw taken there was my uncle's 7x7 he got up Ewell creek. Hiked up to the two mile marker then hunted up the creek bottom from there. But that area is flyblown with blowdown now. My dad actually took a 5x5 that was bigger, but shot one antler off at the base finishing it off. Took that one in a canyon we called A-hole canyon. (named by my great uncle the first time my dad took him in to pack there because as he put it, only an A-hole would kill an elk there) That bull was so big it took 2 extra full packs to bring it out than the nice 5x5 my dad's buddy also shot in there that day. Took us two days of packing to get those bulls out, a rarity for our group. My dad, who lives in Raymond, possibly killed more elk in that unit than anyone. I can't remember a year of my childhood he didn't get an elk. Even in the bad years, if anybody got an elk, dad did. We never hunted the river bottom much, but friends of ours did and were very successful at it.

PM me and I can give you a few areas to try. Just remember, if you get off the valley floor, it's going to be steep.

A buddy of mine had it a couple years ago.  He killed a nice 260" 5pt, his was the third largest of the 5 taken, he's a guy that takes a bull almost annually on the west side, and knows how to hunt them.  The bigger ones were on private land, and I'm sure they paid a fee for it.  Bigger bulls were seen on private and park land.
