Teanaway late cow tag rifle advice.
« on: June 25, 2013, 01:53:16 PM »
I drew the December 17-31 cow tag for teanaway.  I'm planing 2 or 3 scouting trips over before the regular season and have no problem putting in the footwork but need some general guidance for the late hunt.  I'm mostly concerned with the weather factor that time of year.   Can you still find the elk on public ground?  Any advice would be appreciated.

This can be a tough hunt. If the weather has turned cold and snowy early in the year. The elk tend to move out of there. I'd contact some land owners in the valley and see if you can gain access. We have a land owner who lets us hunt his land. A little salmon goes a long ways.

I'm planning on going over in the next couple weeks.  I've got a lot of fresh salmon and halibut.  I will be sure to bring some  with me.

Dad had the tag last year and it dumped snow the night before we were going to head over to hunt. We ended up not going as I90 was closed when we wanted to leave. I think we ended up waiting a week before we went over, by then the elk had moved out of the unit and the snow mobile guys were out having fun in full force.  Dad ended up not filling the tag. Go Early if you can!

I'm planning on hunting the first couple of days of the season.  Then planning on going back on the 26-31.  I will be watching the snow reports closely and adjusting my game plan accordingly.

Almost all the elk are gone by then, at least in the mountains. The second it gets cold all of the ones around our place migrate away so it will be rough locating the stragglers.

Snowmobile and snow shoes. Had that tag 5 years ago and was really suprised by how deep the snow was and the elk were still around. Wasn't an easy hunt by any means. Took me till the last day to fill my tag, which was Jan. 13th at that time. I had the sleds to get around back there and could locate their tracks, but didn't have the snow shoes to get off the road to the areas they were hanging in during the day light. Snow was just too deep then to hike the hills. Gongrats and good luck.

I think I have access to a couple snowmobiles.  I will pick up a couple sets of snowshoes.  Thank you for the heads ups I would hate to not have away to get around if there's deep snow on the ground.

There are quite a few elk that stay on the Ellensburg side of the Teanaway Unit until during that time. Also try anywhere along Lake Cle Elum. There is some punlic land on the NE side of I-90 out of Easton that you can try. Weather is definetly a factor but with a little legwork, you should at least be able to get some shots off.
