Scouting with Wife
« on: June 29, 2013, 07:13:52 PM »
Been taking my wife scouting with me (she calls it hiking) first off how do I convince her to not wear lotions and hair products lol.. We covered 14 miles yesterday, got into some good elk country. She does well being quiet and understanding playing the wind, but we had a funny experience. I hiked into a valley with some big timber and swampy area, I knew there would be elk near by, and I could smell them..I told her to be very quiet, and move slow. We spotted a nice 5x5 bull at 30 yards and I could see another elk in the background. Get my Binos out and start looking, all of a sudden she starts sneezing and had a allergy attack !!! The woods exploded elk running everywhere and she sneezed about 20 times lol... It was pretty funny because she did so well the whole time until we saw them.. Maybe she allergic to elk..But she was a good sport and felt bad. We saw two deer on the way out and had a good day overall. Just thought it was a funny story and wanted to share.

don't worry about the small stuff.  Just be happy that you have wife that will go on hikes with you!

I wear good smelling stuff when I go hiking/scouting and see lots of critters.....I don't wear it when hunting and see all the wrong critters :dunno: I usually just watch the wind and walk slowly and glass a lot....does she have binos?  good bino's changed my world out there now i am the one that stops and falls behind looking at hillsides.....

I was trying to set up a cam and didn't see the elk. And she always wears girley smelling stuff and we still always see animals. I guess it's good practice to use the wind .

If you're hiking that much and presumably getting all sweaty, the "girly smelling stuff" won't hurt anything. If you've got elk downwind they're going to smell you no matter what.

I've had fun with this especially with elk when they see me but dont smell me....and I freeze......when they look away I move they see me move I freeze...until they smell me they do not boogie, in fact they often will snort and huff and come closer trying to figure out what I am.....deer do it too......and I can tel the second the wind shifts because the tension in the animal changes completely from a fight to flight response..... I like scouting its when I usually have my close encounters, probably because I am not acting all predator like being quiet and sneaky :)
