Project Rifle - New Sabotless Bullets
« on: June 28, 2013, 03:34:02 PM »
Some of you know I have already shot some 50x275 grain Barnes XPB's from the Project Gun, Today while I was killing time in Sportsman's Warehouse in Kennewick - i picked up a couple more experimental bullets to shoot.

I got a box of Speer .500x300 gr. Deep Curls...  These bullets will load almost perfecty in the MK85 Wiseman barrel and to loose in the GM DISC barrels.  Knurling the bullets creates a great fit in the DISC 50's that I have.

The Speers are a lot less expensive to shoot at paper and birds than the Barnes bullets - but by the looks of them they would be an excellent deer/elk bullet especially since they are 'Deep Curls'.

They are kinda stubby but for open sight ML's they really could be a good alternative for sabotless

When I got back to my daughters house I did open one of the boxes of 325 Barnes... I was surprised at their construction and the possibilty of decent areodynamics.  I think it was GM54-120 that first mentioned them to me and I should have paid more attention...

These are really nice looking and I really do not doubt their performance factor - except maybe a very close range on a deer... elk no problem...

I really do want to get out and shoot these but we are looking a 90* + temps all next week...  but, I wll get it done sometime...

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

Sounds very interesting.  Im new to the muzzleloader world and just have barely dabbled in rifle reloading so experimenting like this isn't something Im willing to just yet.  But Im excited to see your results

You actually engrave the rifling and also create a gas seal with the jacketed bullets? Are they really that soft?

You actually engrave the rifling and also create a gas seal with the jacketed bullets? Are they really the soft?

In the Wiseman barrel they are tight enough to engrave the copper and once through the crown they go down with 25-35#'s of pressure.  I do not believe they get a complete gas seal that way but close.  For the seal I will use a .510x.125 Shot Card under the bullet.

Copper is not all that hard so it really does engrave just fine.

Now in my other Knight barrels the bullets drop right to the breech with their own weight - so those I will have to knurl between a couple of files...

I am hoping to do that later today and try to get some pictures...
