Mason Co. coyotes, Round Two
« on: July 11, 2013, 03:57:43 PM »
I was out in Tahuya at dawn on Tuesday, mostly out for a walk but I brought my shotgun and a new howler from Bearmanric I have been using. While I was practice stalking on two does and watching their reaction to the call I spotted  a pair of coyotes coming in from the opposite direction. I was standing on the edge of an open area, no camo, just standing there. They spotted me about the same time I saw them and took off running as I turned. Got off one shot from the 12 gauge as they split. I will be going back out there tomorrow morning with all my normal hunting gear and a rifle, get set up in a stand and hopefully get 'em this time.  In the last 9 months I have had a lot more luck with coyotes in Eastern WA, I find lots of coyote sign here in Mason Co but have had a tough time calling them in.  I would like to add that this forum has been a great source of information for me as I become a better hunter.

Went back in this morning, 0500 early. Had a great morning watching for coyotes, deer and the sunrise. Saw a nice little buck I hope I will see again in the fall, no yotes today.

Are you on pope property? Been taking my son out for bear. Been calling and not even seen a coyote.

That stand was in Tahuya DNR land but I do hunt Pope property also. See a lot of sign, very few live coyotes. But still learning and having fun.

In this thick brush i swear they spot you/ smell you before you get a chance seeing them.  Always lots of sign out there but it is work.  Use a shot gun, they will pop out very close, only had one 100 yards out, but he was young and dumb.

I agree, you have to learn to work the thick brush hunting on the west side. I do manage to find a lot of open areas too. Sometimes the scatter gun, sometimes the rifle.  Finding good spots is part of the fun, isn't it? I am going to Eastern WA this weekend, see if I have a bit more luck in the Quincy area. I'd like to explore some of that land around Seabeck, maybe some of us Kitsap/Mason folks can meet up this winter after deer season for some coyote wetwork.
