I've never had good luck with CCI. Remingtons is what I prefer to use.

To be honest... the CCI's work great for me, never had a problem with them unless I have a mechanical problem in the rifle (peened nipple or weak hammer spring). Also the fit of the cap on the nipple is really important. Opps! I should say #11 Mag caps - I do not use Musket Caps at all anymore.  In fact I am still using caps that have to be 10 years old.  And speaking of that, how they are stored is a key factor in cap life.

What rifle are you shooting?

Another excellent cap is the RWS Dynamit Noble 1075+, they are from Germany and are probably the hottest #11 cap on the market.  They also make a Musket cap.

Germans all the way!!! I put one in a glass of water for 24hrs and it fired at the range!!

never an issue with cci caps. Take a look at the nipple you are using and then a good hard look at the powder youve loaded. Switch to the real black powder and you'll see great improvements in the amount of hang/misfires.

Yeah, I only use those german caps.  I'm sure the CCI #11 mags are okay also.

I started using them because I can't find CCI musket magnums. I hate the ones ever shop has now. They are a lot weaker and suck. I switched a my never go back. Sportmans carry's them and Skagit gun does to but are out.

I was wondering if it might be an older sidelock.  Were it I, I am sure I would start by replacing the nipple with a new one, especially if you have been getting extra life from it by re-working it.  Also over time the hammer spring in the lock does loose strength and does need to be replaced.

I would try both of these changes, when you can... Since it was your 'GREAgranddaddies' - it really is due for a bit mechanical upgrading.

This thread inspired me to go out and pop some of the german caps in my T/C NW Explorer.  This gun has given me alot of problems with popping caps in the past, but seems to have improved in reliability since I last got it back from the T/C's service  center.

Me and my 9 year old son took turns loading the caps and firing them off (about 20 or so) in the garage. 

Some caps were much louder than others.   Three went off weakly, but without exploding the cap shell off the nipple, so I had to pry the spent cap off.  (could that be the rifle? I would think that either the cap ignites, or doesn't, and if it does, shouldn't it be fairly equal volume and intensity to other caps? Can a weak hammer cause a weak ignition?)

Two didn't go off on the first hammer hit, and I had to re-cock- that dang NW explorer doesn't seem to have the smack down power on the cap.

I'm gonna do the same exercise with my Disk Extreme (which has ton's of cap smashing power) and see if the the volume/intensity of the cap ignition is more consistent.
