Sight suggestions for Rem 760
« on: July 25, 2013, 08:25:13 AM »
Picked up a new "woods gun" pretty fair - it's a 1950's model Rem 760 in 30-06.  Plan on using it as my dark timber gun for westside elk and blacktail.  Shots over 100 yards not expected, 50 yards more likely.

Really on the fence about how I want to set it up with sights.  It has the factory buckhorn style rear sight on it now.  Don't really care for that style, as it seems to cover up most of the target and is not very adjustable (you slide the "steps" back and forth under the rear sight).

Considering the following-

Replacing the factory sights with a Williams Firesight front and rear.  Have this sight setup on my muzzleloader and really like it.

Going with a peep sight.  Concerned about fast target acquisition.

Going with a scout-style scope.  Got to try one out not too long ago (Thanks Herb ) and really liked it.  Fast target acquisition.  Negatives - cost (scope, picatinny rail and rings, plus gunsmith charges) and just dealing with a scope in the rain.  Remember, we're talking deep weststide timber in November.

Anybody have a setup like this?

Personally I like a receiver/peep sight.  With the aperture out and a bright front site it is very fast, much faster than open sights.  With the aperture in I used it out to 600 meters shooting with the Chinese army rifle team.  I had mine set up with a Williams Guide sight.

Since my cataract surgery I can no longer use metallic sights unless the aperture has a very large face and tiny opening.  I now have a Leupold VX-2 1x4x20mm scope mounted on the receiver.  With it set on 1x it is very fast with both eyes open.  The huge FOV on the low end and 4xmagnification makes it a great 0-300yrd scope.  The Leupold has a very forgiving eyebox so acquisition is very fast.  Leupold has the VX-1 1x4x20mm Shotgun scope same specs but heavier crosshairs, I hope to have one on one of my combo guns this winter.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

Ever think about a red dot for those type of hunting situations. A guy on a other forum on the other coast uses one quite effectively on a 760 06.

I'd roll with the peep.  The one you have in the picture would work perfect.  I have a similar one on a muzzle loader (700 Rem).  Just be aware if you are in rainy timber, water will bead up in your aperature opening sometimes.

Also make sure your front bead shows up good.  I've had problems before with a gold bead disappering on an elks fur.  I wasn't able to pick out the bead very well because the colors were so close.

I put a Williams aperture on my Anchschutz last year and can't believe how small my groups got considering 48-year old eyes and irons.
I would put an XS Ghost Ring 24/7 on a short-medium range, dark timber gun.
I used their Big Dot 24/7 on a 1911 and it's the best sight package I've used.

Great suggestions guys.  I'm definitely leaning towards a fiber optic front sight.  Have one on my ML and in low light it looks like it has batteries in it.

Haven't considered the red dot - pretty sure I want to stay away from glass altogether if I can help it.

I'll check out the XS ghost ring setup as well.
