New to coyote's
« on: August 03, 2013, 09:03:35 AM »
Want to start hunting late this fall.Live in Yakima. What are good locations to hunt? Was thinking Lt. Murray, maybe the Tampico area, lower elevations.I have them basically in my back yard,Terrace Hts.,Rest haven area.County sheriff says no hunting on the ridges here.Is nighttime hunts permitted?Spot lighting.State land,DNR, open?Private by permission only of coarse.Regular hunting license required?Gear,22-250/.17 Hmr.Want to invest in some type of E-caller,thinking Hellfire II.Camo required?Almost seems pointless, state law says 400 square in. hunter orange, correct?I have been watching videos, and a lot of reading of forums.Quiet, blend in,and don't move are the general rules while hunting dogs.Any help would be great. Thanks!Just want to get out of the house this fall and winter if not white fishing.

Watch ur wind, then watch it some more!!!! Slow movements, don't skyline urself. No experience with hellfire, but FoxPro is a topline product. Buy a cpl good hand calls & learn to use them. Camp can be worn without orange. Spot lighting is legal on private, no clue on state or federal land. Something else,, watch the wind!!!

Well, thanks for the replies. At almost fifty, want makes you think I need a safety course?I did read the regs.Safety orange MUST be worn when the general hunting seasons are open, deer, elk, etc.Basiclly from the start of deer to,well you might as well say until until Dec.Read the regs.Regs, any hunter that is hunting in an area that is open for modern firearm deer or elk must wear hunter orange.,If hunting for the following species:Bear,Bobcat,Cougar,COYOTE,Deer,Elk,Fox,Grouse,Hair,Rabbit,And Raccoon!Orange is not required when modern firearm is closed.I read the regs.Page 15,Wash 2013 Game book.Coyote, season, year round,no daily limit,I read the regs,Page 70,Wash 2013 Game book.Don't try to fix my post,THANKS,fast1........

strong 1st and 2nd post.

Not gonna get much help around here with that attitude, and recheck your season dates, modern firearm season for deer and elk are just 2 blips on the radar, most places less then 2 weeks, which leaves plenty of time for hunting yotes without orange on.

Welcome to the site Imr1966.  When you have a chance, take a minute and tells us about yourself, what you shoot, what other hobbies you might have.

As for as "What are good locations to hunt?" , Like you mentioned L.T.Murry is a good start, Cowichie canyon is another.  Anywhere north & northwest of Yakima.

Also please take a minute to use the search option. These questions get asked alot and there is alot of good info already availabe on this site with just a little searching.  You will even find one started by me, where I too needed help.

Welcome aboard & good luck

Glad to help, during deer or elk I do know you have to have a valid tag for that season. You can hunt dogs until you fill your tag, you get your deer and your done for the arrest of the week. No clue were to hunt in Yakima, I can't even find cabelas in that town! Which is good because I couldn't afford to go there anyway.lol good luck & have fun.

If you are carrying a 24 caliber or larger rifle you have to have a valid tag for whatever big game is in season. You can hunt coyotes during modern firearm season with a smaller caliber and not have a tag. Still need to wear orange during modern firearm season regardless of caliber.

Also anywhere you can legally hunt coyotes during the day you can hunt them at night. With the exeption of modern firearm deer and elk seasons. All of this stuff is clearly stated in the hunting regs. Make sure you know the rules before you head out in the field and get yourself in trouble. As for night hunting, I wouldn't recomend it until you are an accomplished daytime hunter. Especially alone. Messing with lights, calls, and guns in the dark is not easy.

Could you cite a source for this please?
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

I don't have this years regs in front of me but it's on page 76 of the 2012 regs. Item 10. " You may not hunt wildlife during any modern firearm deer or elk season with any firearm .24 caliber or larger or shotgun containing slugs or buckshot for big game unless you have a valid license, permit and tag for one of the following: deer, elk, black bear, cougar, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, or moose"

rynokron is right on this, but if your using a caliber smaller than .24 you only need your small game license to hunt coyote whenever you want, i do believe its illegal to spotlight at night in an area open to modern deer tho, now you dont need hunter orange to hunt coyotes during anytime of the year...unless... say your out in an area thats open for deer with a 30-06 you should probly better be wearing hunter orange and have a deer tag in your pocket, because most game wardens would probly give you a ticket,

as far as hunting them goes, i use all hand calls from rrcalls, dont call agressively and only for about 30 seconds then shutup and wait, only call about every 10 minutes and only for 30 seconds or so, i know i have people disagree with me on this, but i always wash me and my clothes with scent killer and try to call with the wind at my back, id prefer to have a coyote come in front of me rather than loop around downwind of me and wind me from behind, coyotes often come in down wind and i prefer for that to be out of front of me, i wont let it get close enough to smell me before i kill it!  :)  dont let empty stands get you down....and my biggest tip is dont walk very far into your stands....dont keep getting up and going to that "better" spot...i will sit down farther back and start calling even if i dont have great shooting lanes, i try to focus more on not getting too close...and its easy to do!
