AR Pistol
« on: August 09, 2013, 02:29:52 PM »
So my dad got one of the shorty AR uppers at one of the gun shows with the intent on buying a pistol lower later. well I recently borrowed his bolt out of that gun and today when I went to put it back in I noticed...No gas tube! So we shot the place an email regarding this and they said that's the way they make them. I have NO idea what that's supposed to mean, are we supposed to put on in? did you make the gun with the intent on it being a single shot? Ive never heard of anything like this. Any help would be appreciated.

PS. This gun is being built to be a PISTOL it has not been nor will it ever be mounted to a RIFLE lower. Just thought I should get the legal out of the way before someone tries to call the ATF on me lol

Is there a gasblock or has the gasport even been drilled in the barrel?

There is a gas block but I should look to see if its drilled. we would like to test it, but we don't have a pistol lower and obviously trying it on a rifle lower would be illegal.

My bet is they forgot to install the tube.

I would check headspace on that upper before firing it. If they forgot the gastube they may have missed something more important

Could this be a pistol caliber/blowback upper and therefor wouldn't use a gas system?

Is the BCG of standard AR15 design?

Is there a hole for a gas tube at the front of the upper receiver?

It has a standard AR Bolt Carrier, and its supposed to be 223/5.56 AR Pistol. we might just track down a pistol lower and give it a test, maybe we are getting worked up for nothing I just thought it was strange there was no gas tube in the rifle.

What manufacture on earth would sell a complete upper, but no gas tube???

Crazy.  has to be an error.

I agree with checking headspace.  That prevented an issue for me with my recent Grendal build.

Yeah... if the BCG is a standard BCG and there is no gas tube, it isn't going to work...   The gun will fire once, but the bolt will not unlock without gas flowing through the carrier and applying pressure to rear of the bolt (gas impingement).  Does the front of the upper receiver have a hole for gas tube to pass into it?  If so, it might be easier to buy an ~$8 gas tube and install it yourself.

If your lower was originally transferred as an 'other' (most stripped lowers are transferred as this, but be sure), you can remove the stock, then use it with a pistol upper.  You can temporarily wrap paracord over the carbine buffer tube if you want to avoid confusion while at the range.  If your lower was transferred as an 'other', it can be converted back and forth as much as you want.

If you bought your lower assembled as a rifle lower, it cannot be converted back to a "pistol" unless you want to jump through a bunch of hoops and paperwork.

...gun laws...   :bash:

I agree, what government idiot who knows nothing about guns came up with the "other", "Rifle", "Pistol" laws. anyways Ill have to try and see if at the gun show this month or next if I can find a pistol lower at a good price and see if that fixes it. or find the guy that we bought it from and see what the deal is. We bought the upper without a bolt or charging handle and just put in our own. I could have missed something there too but when we checked them out they all looked like they had standard AR BCG's. and there is a hole in the receiver for a gas tube, its just see through at the moment  :chuckle:. Ill see what we can figure out and get back to yall! thanks for the help guys!
