Choke tube stuck.
« on: August 10, 2013, 06:52:26 PM »
I was recently given a 20 gauge mossberg 500 from my uncle and the choke tube is in there super tight... I can't loosen it. How do I get it out without doing damage?

Spray penetrating oil on it snd let it soak, repeat until it comes loose. Heat works too but be careful not to burn the blueing..
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

That's what I would do, soak the whole muzzle end in Kroil or like wise. Then put some heat to it.

If its real bad after a kroil or whatever penetrating lube you choose, I've had good luck with bolt freeze off, spraying directly on the choke, you can also wrap the barrel in a town and tap all around the choke to help work the oil in and break any bond between the tube and barrel.

Most Gun Shops will have it.  Once you get it out, put some automotive "Anti-seize compound" on the threads before you screw it back in.  Stuck choke tubes are a common problem when no lube is used, and they are left in for a long time.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Kroil, the oil that creeps.  Incredible stuff, I did equipment repair for a construction company and Kroil was my best friend.  I bought  a 22 Revolver that was so leaded that you couldn't see the rifling, soaked it with Kroil and the lead slid out in strips.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Definately use Kroil oil as mentioned.  The best stuff out their for choke tubes is the Nikal anti seize.   Salt and water resistant and is good for high temp.  Great stuff.
Cut em!

Where do I get kroil?

Check auto and industrial supply stores as well.

Also maybe Home Depot or Lowes.

Run the Kroil down from the breech end so it can run under the threads.
Use a good wrench when you reef on it.
