Washington: Pierce County Council Hearing to Protect Shooting Ranges Tomorrow

Posted on August 12, 2013

Tomorrow, the Pierce County Council is scheduled to have its final hearing on Proposal 2013-35 (http://online.co.pierce.wa.us/cfapps/council/iview/proposal.cfm?proposal_num=2013-35).  This important ordinance would protect shooting ranges in Pierce County.

Proposal 2013-35 will help continue the availability of low-cost firearms training to local law enforcement agencies, as well as shooters and sportsmen.  Protecting shooting ranges also allows for continued firearms safety training and recreational shooting for the general public.

Please attend this hearing that starts at 6:00 pm tomorrow at the Orting Lions Club located at 19725 Orville Road East in Orting.

If you are unable to attend this hearing, please contact members of the Pierce County Council and urge them to SUPPORT Proposal 2013-35.   Proposals like 2013-35 are needed to help strengthen and protect the Second Amendment and Washington’s hunting heritage.  Council contact information is provided below:

Please pass Proposed Ordinance No. 2013-35 regarding “Shooting Ranges”

Message (It’s always best to write your own words, but feel free to copy and paste):

To the Honorable Pierce County Council:

I am writing today to respectfully ask that you pass proposed ordinance no. 2013-35: An Ordinance of the Pierce County Council Adopting a New Chapter 8.78 of the Pierce County Code, "Shooting Ranges."  Although I am not able to attend the hearing planned for Tuesday, August 13th, I would like you know that I fully support proposed ordinance 2013-35 as it is needed to help strengthen and protect the Second Amendment and Washington’s hunting heritage.  This ordinance affects the entire state of Washington; please pass this ordinance and set a good example for the other counties in our great state.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Here is one of the positive replies received regarding your actions of support:

"District No. 6 Legislative update: Ordinance No. 2013-35

Thank you to everyone who contacted me about Ordinance 2013-35,
An Ordinance of the Pierce County Council Adopting a New Chapter 8.78 of  the Pierce County Code, "Shooting Ranges." The Ordinance was adopted 4-0 at the August 13th 2013 in-district meeting held at the Orting Lions Club.  As mentioned in the TNT article by Steve Maynard (http://www.thenewstribune.com/2013/08/13/2729658/county-council-approves-gun-range.html), the proposal was amended to reflect current hour limits and should go into effect after approval by the Department of Ecology.

The County Council received an overwhelming amount of support for this Ordinance and I wanted to personally thank you for sending the e-mails, making the calls and speaking at the Committee and Council meetings.  This Ordinance will protect shooting ranges and allow for continued firearms safety training and recreational shooting for the general public.
