Tuna in September?

I'm hoping to get back out west sometime in September, if possible with a break in training before going to my advanced airframe, and know nothing about tuna fishing. Is it still going in mid September? Any charter recommendations? Also plan to get in some salmon time and chase elk with my bow. Just hoping for that break, but have to wait and see... will be last minute.

Some guys and I are scheduled for a tuna trip on 30 Aug and I'm told it is the peak of the season so I would think it should still be good tuna fishin in mid September, I have also heard of guys talking about fishing them in October even so you should be golden !!!

It lasts as long as the weather holds.  September is usually a really good month for tuna.  Once the storms start arriving and the water cools off they move out...could be mid October.

Who are you booked with?  I went out with the same outfit robodad and cohoho did, but I went during a weather window In mid-October.  Lights-out fishing!!  We were only 30 miles out and plugged the boat in a few hours.  Eat your Wheaties.

I went out September 11th this last time, and we had the boat limited in the first day 240+ tuna.  Mr Magoo is who we usually go with better start getting booked early the better boats get filled fast.  We usually do the 2 night 3 day packages it run 600, and some change if I remember correctly.  Another thing you may want to think about is getting a stockpile of jars, and a pressure cooker for canning all of your tuna.  There is a fee per fish for cutting the loins out of your tuna which I recommend it can be a pretty big chore to get all the tuna cut up, and canned without having to deal with cutting the loins out as well.  On a side note tip your deckhand some of these guys only make money off of cutting out the loins of your fish, and whatever tips the fishermen give them.

We did go but the weather kinda sucked, had to deal with a puker all day but he rallied toward the end then became an arrogant…..well nevermind, we caught 29 I think and had a good time as well. We went with All Rivers and Saltwater Charter and fished with Darrell  I think the cost was around $400 for the day !! I think it would be much better if there were less people on the boat cause it was just a mad house grabbing rods and reeling in fish untangling lines etc…not really my definition of fishing but it worked so I'll be back out there some day !!

It starts as early as Late june to early July. Fishing was good all last season clear into the begining of November. Weather is the important factor. I run a six pack charter out of Westport. Epic Fishing Adventures. We wacked them prety good all year.

Mid september should be great if the weather is good at the time like the other guys mentioned. I dont personally know Come Get Some but i do know he has a big bad a** boat! You also cant go wrong with Mark or Ian at All rivers and saltwater charters.

Is that a pretty typical size tuna to catch?  How much meat do you get off one of those?

If I recall correctly, we were getting fish averaging 16-18#, with a few solidly in the 20's.  A good hand at loining out albies should have the fish giving up 50% of their round weight in meat.

ELKRunner- that was one of the smaller ones but his first ever TUNA  - same for all the others pictured.  They all will wear you out. 
The biggest weighed on our boat was 28# but several others reported 30-40# caught reguarly.

The three fish weighed 72#

Wear raingear even if its 80 and sunny. Wear rubber boots. A must. Their willl be blood everywhere . If your charter uses bait casters, do not thumb a tuna. You can't stop them. It's the hardest fighting fish ever.

Looks like a blast..I keep wanting to go each year but the dang price gets in my way.
