If you're house hunting, buying a truck is the worst thing you can do until you buy a house. It will screw up debt ratio. Just wait if you're smart.

I agree and that is why I am looking for an older truck. I want to keep my debt ratio down and then we would put the difference into savings. With hunting season approaching and the selling season winding down, we are looking into waiting until spring so we can stockpile our savings a little more.

Good plan......
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I vote for toyota tacoma.  Best truck hands down.  They will run forever and hold their value extremely well.

Gotta second the Toyota (any kind Tundra, Tacoma, etc). I have a 07 (first year of new style) and the only time it has spent in the shop is for typical maintenance. Almost at 100,000 miles and I would put it up against a newer vehicle any time.

The one unfortunate thing is they sell for very high.

I am back looking for a truck and wanted some opinions. I am trying to keep my payments down as much as possible since we are house hunting. I have been looking at Tundras, Tacomas, Silverados and F150s. It seems that most in my price range have pretty high to very high mileage. I am not opposed to a "higher" mileage truck but was wondering what your "comfortable" mileage range would be for the trucks I listed. What I mean is, is there a cut off as far as current mileage goes where you would say, "nope, too many miles"?
Don't buy anything until the house is bought.  Car loans are easy to get but your home loan isn't and you could really hurt yourself adding more debt.  House first, cummins second!
MAGA!  Again..

I'd have no problem buying a truck before buying a house. Just pay cash for it.  8)

When I was looking for another Frontier, there were about 24 of them between Seattle Bellingham for $7 ooo and 50,00 plus miles. All four doors.
I ended p buy new. But my last Frontier before a gal it me had 120,000 and never a problem.
Roomier than the Tacoma. :twocents:

A tremendous amount of depreciation occurs with years not miles.. So with any truck 10years or older ('03 now), most of the depreciation that is going to occur from age has already happened. My brother just bought an '01 ford with 100k on it.. and I tend to agree with what someone said about 120K or less. I think f-150/tundra/silverado are all decent in general. The Chevy generally has a weaker automatic tranny than the ford, but if you find one with the 5.3/variable displacement it will probably get better mileage than the others.  In the 97-05 fords the 4.6 engine seems to have less issues than the V6 or the 5.4. you may have to research a bit what issues the tundra has. Everyone has their brand preference.. One problem with "older', at least for those of us who need/want a crew cab is that ford didnt make one in a half ton until '01, and chevy didnt until two or 3 years after that..

I dont think the tacoma would be big enough for my needs.. is the gas mileage in a 6cyl, 4x4 any better than the full size trucks? (everything I've looke dup has suggested it is not, but I'm curious what the guys who drive them are getting..)

In the years I have considered, Tacomas only got 2-3 mpg better than a Tundra. Not worth it IMHO. I've always chosen the Tundra.
