Truck hunt (prices vs mileage)
« on: August 19, 2013, 02:45:15 PM »
I am back looking for a truck and wanted some opinions. I am trying to keep my payments down as much as possible since we are house hunting. I have been looking at Tundras, Tacomas, Silverados and F150s. It seems that most in my price range have pretty high to very high mileage. I am not opposed to a "higher" mileage truck but was wondering what your "comfortable" mileage range would be for the trucks I listed. What I mean is, is there a cut off as far as current mileage goes where you would say, "nope, too many miles"?

Would comfortable with 120,000 miles and expect to some money into it when things go bad.
I have heard good reports form friends about the Tundras, they do complain about the gas mileage though.
Did not make your list is the Ford Ranger which a good thing, they have front alignment issues.

Progressives are coming for your guns.
What are you going to do?

Well me, I do not have any guns, gave away or sold them 15 years ago.

I don't believe Ranger's come in 4 doors either so that put them off my list as well.

Are you wanting 4 full size doors, or something like the Tundra access cab work for you?

I love my tundra access cab. Its great as a hunter and a dude with young kids.  I bought it with 201,000 miles and I'm up to 240,000 miles. I do my own oil changes and basic tune up type stuffs: trannie fluid, brake fluid, spark plugs, air filter etc.

I think the access cab WOULD work but I would prefer 4 full doors because I tend to haul around my buddies when we go hunting.

I have had good luck in years past with 6-9 year old F150s and GMs with 75-90,000 miles.  The first owner took the 70% depreciation and I had very little in the way of major repairs for another 70-90,000 miles.  Kind of wish I still had my '85 F150 Xcab with the 300/6 and 3-speed manual with a granny 4th gear, what a great field truck and dirt simple to work on.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

If I was looking for a good used truck i'd be after a 1994-99 Silverado Z71; hopefully a later model with the 3rd door at least. 70-100k mi. Easily should be able to get 80k more out of it w/out major repairs if its been previously cared for. Same with the late 90s F150/250.

If you're house hunting, buying a truck is the worst thing you can do until you buy a house. It will screw up debt ratio. Just wait if you're smart.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I agree and that is why I am looking for an older truck. I want to keep my debt ratio down and then we would put the difference into savings. With hunting season approaching and the selling season winding down, we are looking into waiting until spring so we can stockpile our savings a little more.
