Girlfriend wants to learn to shoot a bow. Recommendations?
« on: August 31, 2013, 05:37:36 PM »
My girlfriend wants to get into bow hunting, but she's pretty wishy washy on it and really just wants to learn to shoot a bow.  I don't want to buy a bow that she can't also hunt deer with.  Any recommendations on a light enough bow for a girl who has a fairly weak upper body but could still be used to kill a deer at 30 yards?

Awesome, thanks! Are most of the bows on the link able to kill a deer, as well?  I'm not an archery expert so I don't know what poundage (or yardage per pound) is considered a minimum to kill a deer.  I've only ever shot 50+lb bows, so I don't know if a 30lb bow will be good enough for a deer at 30 yards?  I doubt she'll be shooting beyond 30 yards.

Technically she would have to draw 40 pounds to be legal by the regs....my 14 year old daughter shoots the bear apprentice 2 and it is adjustable from 20-40 pounds i believe.  she still hasnt shot anything live yet, but she can pop the 30 yard target at the range pretty good but i wouldnt feel comfortable letting her shoot to 40 yet.

Teach her or get her archery lessons......once she is a  proficient archer, move on to hunting.

Id get her going at a local club where she will meet  and shoot with other women and through them she will understand her own interests better.  Nothing worse than a hunter in camp who really doesnt want to hunt.

Just the club archery thing is a great fun social enviroment.  SHould be great fun for her.  Good luck..........

 :yeah: Get her some lessons!
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Get her a quality modern bow. Set up a range at your house and shoot with her. Show her some of the basics but dont critisize. My girl has a bowtech assasin sd and loves it. Its light, and attractive. Dont waste your time buying a "girl " bow with pink highlights and female marketing names.  Dont fall into the starter bow mentality.

I respectfully disagree. Get her into a shop that rents bows. Have her shoot a few times before you spend that kind of money. Archery isn't for everyone. Depending on where you live, there should be a bow shop in the area that can rent you and fairly high quality bow, especially if you're looking to buy in the future. then if she likes it, I agree with this comment. Get her a good quality bow and the right accoutrements to go with it. That's right, I said accoutrements.

I bought my wife a pink martin leopard its been a great bow she hasn't hunted with it yet, but she enjoys shooting some arrows in the backyard with me.  The best part is it was a very reasonable bow for her to get started with, and it will kill anything that we have around here.

Hands down go with the Mission Craze by Mathews.  It is a very good quality bow for a budget.  I bought my girlfriend one and she loves it.  It is nice because it is extremely adjustable 30-70 pounds and 18-30 inch draw length.  (Most Adjustable bow on the market and number one bow sold in 2012).

I agree take it to Denton.  They have beginner archery classes at the range there too.  Rock Creek Archery.

Got mine the diamond infinite edge started with low poundage and worked up as she got comfortable. She pulling sixty now. It's a great bow smooth, darn near silent and pretty fast shooter.
Slinging arrows and flinging lead is in my blood!
