High buck hunt
« on: September 02, 2013, 10:41:30 AM »
Ok I'm getting pretty frustrated with the game regs. This will be the first year I can make it out for the high buck hunt and I know this trip takes some planning. I'm not expecting to have it all together for my first year but I would really like to find someplace....anyplace that shows me the boundary's for the wilderness areas. Am I missing something g in the game regs for area descriptions. I want to be able to input boundary's into my gps but can't find anywhere it gives these boundary's. is there an elevation limit on when you can begin hunting? It seems the only GMU outlined is the Alpine unit. Can't find Chelan wilderness boundary's anywhere. Very frustrated. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The state defers to the feds for those boundaries.  You would either need to contact the Forest Circus or even the Park Service or get maps set by them.

Check ranger stations. Call them first and they would have maps.

:yeah:
Maps are easy to find.  You can find them online in a few places but you would be better off to get a paper map from the forest service.  Got mine for 6 bucks I think.

Get the Hunting GPS Maps chip or software for your GPS. You not only know exactly where the boundaries are, but you will also know where you are relative to them. You can hunt right up to the boundary.

Free resource for topo maps.  Wilderness boundaries aren't exactly easy to describe in text.  Many of them are just the top of a ridge that separates two basins - for somewhat arbitrary reasons.  You may have to correlate the wilderness boundaries on a topo map with images from Google Earth to figure out exactly where they are.

Also be VERY careful to watch out for National Park boundaries - you can get in big trouble if you wander inside one hunting.  You really gotta have your navigation skills down to go on the high hunt - off trail navigation is no joke!  I study maps and images of my areas almost daily all year to try to remember all of the landmarks and peaks, what's in the next valley, etc.

If you're new to the backcountry, be careful and have someone know where you're going.

No I am definitely not new to backcountry hunting. It's my preferred method but I am new to the high buck hunt. So as you say I'm trying to get my boundary's set up.  Since I have never hunted hunted this season I don't want to accidentally wander outside the lawful areas.

go down to the skykomish ranger district office, you can get maps from them that shows access to the wilderness areas. Some you have to pay for some are free, you can access alpine lakes and henry m jackson from those areas. Those are the ones closest to you so thats where I would start, pm me if you need more info I know of a few access points into alpine lakes
Coastal Perspective.

You should try to free version for your phone  of the huntmaps - I like it...... thinking about getting full version for myself .

Go here and download the ones for Washington. It's a .kmz file for use in google earth.

You can also download the usgs maps for free which show the wilderness boundaries
