The buck was taken by my hunting partner while I watched.....shot was 17 yards and took place at 1800 hours. After all was said and done we were finished by 0100 hours.....a few Coronas later and we were asleep by 0200.
There is nothing better in life than sharing memories like this with a long time hunting buddy.With the above statement being said we went back out yesterday to find a deer (hopefully a buck) for me. We passed on a few does and finally decided to settle in for the night. A few beers and an MRE later it was bed time...cots under the stars was the sleeping arrangements....so nothing fancy. Upon waking this morning I turned and noticed a big doe 10 yards away eating some brush. I promptly exited my sleeping bag and grabbed my bow. I proceeded to get into position (while wearing my boxers and unlaced boots for a good shot......all the mean while my buddy was snapping pics of me in my underwear stalking a doe...
(hope those don't end up on the internet).
Needless to say the big doe did not cooperate and the smaller doe with her was not worthy of my arrow. I was still waiting for horns. Well we are awake and the deer are moving so we packed up the sleeping bags and headed out for the last hunt before we both have to return to the real life (work...
).
We get 1/4 - 1/2 mile into our hike a doe shows herself. She is 40 yards out broadside, but in very heavy brush. I can't tell if she is big enough to shoot so we start our stalk. As we close the distance, I am convinced she is a medium sized doe and will make some fine burger........
.......I am a little torn, I have a second deer tag and will get a freezer doe in a couple months. I also have plenty of time to hunt and would like to find horns. Inside I was very torn...shoot or don't shoot....THEN IT CAME TO ME....Memories with good buddies is worth far more to me than horns on my wall. My best hunting buddy was standing 5 feet behind me and it was the last day to hunt this deer this year together. If this doe cooperates...she is going to die!!
Well needless to say I close the distance to 20 yards and I have broadside with about a 4" window between pecker poles. I come to full draw....settle in on her vitals.....and send it. The Mathews Heli-m, Easton 300 axis infused arrow and slick trick 125 grain broadhead did it's job with a solid double lung shot. This doe left a blood trail a blind person cold have followed. We waited about 10 minutes and started a very slow blood trail. After seeing the amount of blood we knew it was a devastating kill shot. 50 yards later we found the doe and the work began.
I wouldn't change a thing about the last few days. Me and my hunting partner tagged out on archery deer (100%) and went (50%) on horns. We made countless memories and most importantly have some great burger on the way.
Now I just need to find a bear......
