Two wordsIgnition module, all Ford owners of that era should carry a spare.
i know exactly why youre having problems. its because you drive an 84 ranger.
if you have spark on crank the module works , pull a plug wire off and stick a screw driver in it and have some one crank it or cross the solenoid with the key on . ( neutral ). start with a close gap to ground and start pulling away if your spark will jump a half inch your spark is fine and you need to look into fuel delivery. I have seen plenty of fords with the coil wire corroded at the coil . could it have slamed the choke shut with a back fire , make sure the choke butterfly is free , look down the carb and pump the gas you can watch the accelerator pump nozzles squirt fuel. if you nee me to walk you through it call me Corey (206)522-6100 work number.
