First Archery Bull
« on: September 19, 2013, 09:21:10 PM »
Awesome hunt in eastern Oregon.  First archery elk hunt resulted in tagging out on day 5.  5x6 came in quick to cow calls, 30 yard shot and he didn't go too far. Great day in the woods!

Fulfilled a lifelong dream to bowhunt elk and take one with my bow. On day 5 of our hunt after many close encounters, September 13th, at 9:25 am, it all came together. Could not be happier, I am already counting down the days till next September. I was cow calling to try to get a location on where my hunting partner was in the drainage below me when a bull on the adjacent ridge lit up. I cow called again and he was quickly heading in my direction. With little time to spare, I bailed into the creek bottom, shrugged off my pack, nocked an arrow, ranged where I thought he might show and gave a couple mews while standing behind a big Fir tree. It drew him right to me and as I saw his antlers coming through the pines, I came to full draw. The bull came right to where I had ranged and stopped. 30 yard shot uphill was lethal and he didnt go far. The pure anticipation of bloodtrailing my bull to the sheer elation of looking up from the ground to see a blonde body and antlers sticking up out of the bushes was more than I couldve ever expected. Congrats to everyone and their accomplishments this season and best of luck to those still carrying a tag!

Do you mind giving a general location like Eagle Caps, Enterprise...?  Almost looks like Starky.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Great archery bull! And Oregon isn't an easy state to get it done in like it used to be. Congrats!
