Today I learned that my "adopted" son, David Glidden, is no longer with us.
He was a troubled teen and my son was his best friend. When there was trouble at home, the sheriff would bring him to my house for time out. The more time he spent with us, the less frequent those trips were. I started him hunting ducks and fishing. He eventually stayed with us towards the end of high school.
He got messed up with the drug culture in Seattle and disappeared for many years.
One day he reappeared and tried to start anew. He got cleaned up, got a good job, eventually got married, and had 2 beautiful children. We had many conversations on how to go about life and be a good father.
He eventually fell back into old ways. This time alcohol and not hard drugs.
He got drunk at his house in Spokane, chased the cat outside with a toy pistol, one night. Someone called the cops.
In all the chaos, he was shot 5 times and paralyzed from the chest down.
He was living back in the Seattle area.
Because of his injuries, he was on some heavy meds. He was becoming more paranoid each day and delusional
Some time this past Sunday, he took his own life.
My heart knows he is in no pain anymore and free from his demons.
My heart is aching for my real son, Clifford, because he had just talked to him that day and said there was no indications.
I would like to ask those with kids, Love them, listen to their joy, their sorrows, their fears. Help them or try to get them help if the need is there.
David was not my blood, but he was a special child, with imagination, creativity, and spirit.
I have and will always treasure the artwork and a hand made knife he gave me. He asked me once if I still had them, I said always. He said good, so you don't forget me.
I will never forget you son

Sorry to hear that. Children today are surely at risk, unlike 50-60 years ago. It is wonderful that he had you and your son in his life. I'm sure it gave him comfort.

Condolences,we are dealing with something similar in my house right now, a young gentleman that my wife knows through her daughter took his own life with a pistol he stole at a bachelor party that did not include alcohol or drugs last weekend, the boys went shooting in the hills,he snatched the weapon with nobody noticing and wandered up the hillside,he was found the next morning when he did not awnser phone calls, his problems stemmed from being sexually molested by his father as a child. His father shot himself,he shot himself and his brother(also molested) had a gun "accident" last year.

Sad, sorry for your loss. You should be commended for being there for him throughout his life and all of the ups and downs. What a testimony of what being a dad is all about

I'm sorry for the loss to you, his wife and kids. He was blessed by you and you by him. You saw something in him and made that come out even more. I wish more folks did what you do. May he rest in peace

Sorry to hear about the loss. I am sure others would agree his time here on this planet was extended and more pleasurable because you lent out a helping hand. May he rest in peace.
