Model 98 Mauser Action. Possible .300 RUM build?
« on: September 24, 2013, 07:52:47 PM »
so I picked up an old Model 98 Mauser 243 the other day for $160 from a friend that needed some cash. its in a belle and Carlson stock and has a tasco on it. I am thinking about stripping it down to the action and ordering a 300 Rum barrel. Any thoughts?

It may be too short.

300 Win mag will work better.

What are you going to do?

Well me, I do not have any guns, gave away or sold them 15 years ago.

 :yeah:

Assuming that the action is strong enough (depending on how old it is) after you opened up the bolt face up, modified the feed rails and magazine, and put a new barrel on, you may be better off with a new action.

You could buy a new Remington for the gunsmith cost and have a better, more reliable gun as opposed to that conversion.

I guess a 4th Remington 700 never hurt nobody. I like the Sendero but I really think I could get away with a less expensive model. after all I am going to get the barrel threaded. I'm not a fan of heavy recoil. I already have a decent amount of scar tissue from the bridge of my nose to my eyebrows :chuckle:

mauser triggerguards and their feed rails are the biggest obstacle to changing caliber.  the box is mostly cartridge specific.  a round like the RUM is so much fatter the likelihood of it feeding is almost nil.  it will take a lot of work and money to get it to feed those shells.

to short of action , way better off buying a cheap 700 and builing from there 98's are expensive to build , 308 norma  or 338/06 maybe . I have an old sporterized 98 that just sits in the safe  :twocents:
