Archery during muzzy season
« on: September 27, 2013, 09:10:11 AM »
Is it legal to use archery equipment during muzzy season.  I thought I read it in the regs once but then I went back and looked but couldn't find it.  I have my disability crossbow permitt so I am also wondering if you can use archery during muzzy season would it be legal to use a scope on my crossbow during muzzy and rifle season

Yeah it's legal, it's a lesser weapon issue.  You can hunt anything that's less capable of the actual weapon designation.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Yes it is legal to hunt with a bow during modern and muzzle. Or if you have the multi tag you could hunt all seasons with a bow. That's pretty much how I use the multi tag.

Alright thanks.  Well I will be taking it with me this weekend since it is suppose to be raining and I havent got an animal with it yet.  Snuck up on a nice buck during archery season had it at 10 yards but didn't wanna burn up the multi season tag so early.

Are you guys sure that it is legal to use a bow during ML season?  It used to not be legal a couple years ago.  Did they change it?  Always thought it was stupid that it was not legal as it is a "lesser" weapon, but it was not.

You can use the scope on the X-bow during Modern season, but if legal during ML, I would guess the answer would be no scope on it if you cannot use a scope on it during archery season.

Muzzleloader tag holders may only
hunt during muzzleloader seasons with
muzzleloader equip
This is from the regs regarding Firearm Restricted Areas, I am not sure why it would be different in the non-restricted areas.  So, still not legal where I live.

Yet it's legal to use a bow during muzzleloader season (if you have a muzzleloader or multi season tag).

I contacted F & G about this. I was told the only way you can use a lesser weapon (bow during muzzy for example) is if you hold a multi season tag.

I don't think it is legal,  I believe the lesser weapon only applies during modern firearm season.

EDIT,  see above post,  you will be fine since you have the multi season tag.

Please read the regs before posting!!! Here is the direct quote from the regs. Multi-season tags have nothing to do with it. Yes it is legal.

Quote
Hunting Method: Muzzleloader tag holders can only hunt during muzzleloader seasons and must hunt with muzzleloader or archery equipment. hunting equipment must meet regulations on page 76-77

In the past it wasn't legal, but they changed the law and made it legal a year or two ago.

The point to be made here is that you have to have a ML license to hunt with archery equipment during the ML season......

Wonder why they did not change it in the Firearm Restricted Areas?  WDFW's anti-consistency agenda strikes again I guess.   :bash:

We have a guy who's ex girl friend put a no contact order on when they broke up .Part of the order says no firearms. ML are firearms in this state. Thus to hunt with us he had to purchase ML tag, but hunts with a bow. He can only hunt ML elk tag. He cannot later hunt a archery season.

He could do the same thing for modern deer if he wanted.

The state is aware that people who have been restricted by a court are doing this and accomidated them.

The same goes for hunter Ed. They can take the class but not handle firearms. They Are tested handling a bow.

Not sure which parts of these are unclear?

Deer: Hunting Method: Muzzleloader tag holders can only hunt during muzzleloader seasons and must hunt with muzzleloader or archery equipment.

Elk: Hunting Method: Muzzleloader tag holders can hunt only during the muzzleloader seasons and must hunt with muzzleloader or archery equipment.

What page?  I looked all over for it.  Still not legal to use a bow during muzzle in F.R. Areas.

Sure it is. Why wouldn't it be? If you have a muzzleloader tag, you can use a muzzleloader or a bow (during muzzleloader season, of course.) And a bow is certainly allowed under the firearm restriction rules, since it's not even a firearm!

pg 81. Muzzleloader tag holders may only
hunt during muzzleloader seasons with
muzzleloader equipmentas defined by
department rule.

pg 48. Muzzleloader tag holders can hunt
only during the muzzleloader seasons
and must hunt with muzzleloader
or archery equipment. Hunting
equipment must meet regulations on
pages 76-77.

Without a doubt no one will be cited for using archery equipment in a FR area. Pg 81 is not updated to the new standard because the state is defining archery equipment as muzzleloader equipment under hunting methods and archery equipment is already allowed in FR areas.
People get offended at nothing at all. So, speak your mind and be unapologetic.

The hunting pamphlet is not the actual law. I wouldn't go by one inconsistency in the pamphlet.
