Will this storm affect Muzzie season? only 6 days away!
« on: September 29, 2013, 09:32:57 PM »
I was wondering what the more-experienced-than-me folks thought about this (that's basically everybody, since I've never been elk hunting).  I will be up in the Dicky and Sol Duc units next weekend, and wondered if anybody had insight as to whether or not this storm would make a difference at all on the upcoming season.  The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is thatmaybe some trees might come down across inainactive logging roads and could hinder vehicular travels. Not bad for those of us who plan on hiking and biking in anyways right?  Hopefully my power stays on long enough to read some responses. Thanks guys!

The wind and blowdown on the ridges may move the elk down into lower calmer areas.  Give it an hour of calmer weather and the elk will be back up on the ridges.  Shouldn't do much to them by the time muzzy opens unless we have another big storm on Friday night.

Tree blowdown isn't always an easy obstacle in Sol Duc.  Dickey shouldn't be too bad, you can probably just climb over the downed tree.  There are parts of Sol Duc where the trees might be 5 ft diameter and sitting about a foot or two off the ground, so you have a big road block.  Sol Duc I'd be more worried about washouts, there was a big one that took out a huge section of road a few years back and there are bridges in there now that have big potholes as you leave the bridge surface.  There's been a good amount of snow up by seven lakes basin recently so it might force some of the elk out of the park and down to the FS land.  Dickey should be plenty swampy, especially in the clearcuts.  On the bright side, most all the tracks will be washed clean and good mud for the elk to leave new ones.

:yeah: your going to get wet. Keep your powder dry. The only real problem with rain is bloodtrailing. Your hunting the thickest country our state has to offer so be through. Bring some back up boots, good luck!

Spied a herd with a couple nice bulls and several raghorns hanging out together yesterday in the downpour.  Guessing the rut down my way is over.  Been pretty quiet to.

here's a webcam shot for hurricane ridge, a little lower and gets less snow than the meadows above sol duc or the ridges across from 603.  If it keeps up a couple more days, it can maybe push more elk down to your area.
