Theres a lot of private property, so it's hard to access, there are a lot of elk, you can see them by the hundreds when you drive between Randell and Packwood in the evening, but when the hunters hit the wood they all disappear.

Yeah pretty much all private in the valley. Especially in mentioned area between randle and packwood. Long time family friends own a large piece loaded with elk along the river. Family and friends with permission do well. Every year though, even with it posted numerous aholes still shoot elk on the property that have zero permission. Just an FYI, the local landowners don't like it and will press charges. I think the lack of logging has brought a lot of the elk down to the valley. Lots of protection and feed the majority find no need to leave.

yeah! i saw a ton of elk in the open feilds of randle the other weekend! 6 spikes and two bigger bulls with a few cows in one heard! ive heard alot is private! there is a road right before packwood that take you all the way up the hil where i found not a lot but a few hunters and by driving up those roads for a good few hours i found most was free to hunt. i wish i remmebered what road it was and maybe it would give you guys a better idea of what im talking about. but i know theres loads of elk and even deer in the area its just a matter of finding them in the thick stuff i guess... :dunno:

Indians the other night shot a smoker bull after dark on the East side of Packwood.
Gotta love it.

If you are talking about packwood the unit, I've been bow  hunting the s e side for a few years now but no longer will.the elk seem very pressured and there is alot of knight time driving and shooting going on overthere . Game dept does not seem interested in looking into what's going on overthere.

I have spent a lot of time hunting the packwood unit.  The elk and deer numbers are a shell of what they where 20 years ago.  Most of the elk now stay in the valley on private land.  I think the biggest reason for this is because there is feed in the valley.  But there are still some elk up in the NF.  They are really scattered and in small pockets but they are there.  Once the snow starts getting deep hit the drainages looking for elk tracks.  Once you find a drainage with elk tracks start hunting.  Some huge bulls get killed out of the packwood unit every year.

That's a damn good buck for Packwood! Idk what it is but I love the looks of the areas I've found in to hunt over there! No bucks shot yet but I've only been in there 2 years now. Seen bucks just no shots!  :bash:
