I broke my scope base!
« on: October 06, 2013, 07:59:17 PM »
It took 687 rounds, but I finally broke something on my 338/375 Striker.

While out testing new loads, I had a shot land 3" out of the group at 100 yards. That was a red flag because this gun has always shot .75 MOA or better with pretty much every load I've tried. I gave the case a once over looking for pressure signs thinking maybe something was wrong with the load. Finally gave up and called it shooter error (it has happened once or twice )

Went to fire another round, missed the target completely, and felt something hit my shoulder. Now I stopped, emptied the gun and started to take the whole thing apart. I thought that I must have really screwed up and broke something. I had taken the gun out of the stock and was about to pull the scope off when I saw this.

The windage screw on the right hand side of the base had broke. I've never seen anything like this! The recoil on this pistol isn't that harsh so I was surprised to see this happen.  I guess it just took a beating after hundreds of heavy loads. :dunno:

Now I need to come up with a stronger ring/base setup. I'm just a little bummed because I wanted to run this pistol for deer season. Now I'll have to fall back on the 284 Win Striker.

Sucks. Can you get a quick replacement and rob the screw from that replacement and get you back in business?

I thought about doing that, I have a few spare bases I could steal one from. But now I'm not sure that I trust this style of base any more. I may just need to beef up the whole system. I'm still trying to figure out if this is just a fluke or if there's something specific that made it fail.

The biggest problem would be trying get out and rezero  by next weekend. I will have it back up in time for elk though. At least I got a couple of other guns dialed in while I was out today. I may just have to break down and use a rifle! :bash: :chuckle: Maybe this is a sign from the hunting gods that I need to use the 358 Win this year.

:chuckle: Na stick with the handguns :IBCOOL:

It's hard to tell from the pic but it might have been a small flaw in the screw head/ or maybe a little void that helped it fail. I got away from any of the mounts with windage screw like that. I have just always thought of them as one more thing to fail. Even though they never have on any of my rifles that I run them on. I just have gone to different mounts.

Thanks for the offer. The more I think about it, I really should redo the entire mount. I always thought that I'd sheer off one of the base mount screws. This would be a good time to step up to 8x40 screws.

I'm just happy that the scope has lasted this long. Not many rifle scopes can hold up to heavy handgun recoil, especial when you add a muzzle brake to the mix as well.

You better be nice, I'm printing your guys'  paychecks right now. I may "withhold" a little extra for the "fix the bosses gun fund" :chuckle:

:chuckle:  Now I'm just going to make sure you don't have any time to hunt for the rest of the year.

We start 7 day work weeks with no over time effective Tuesday. And I'm sending you back to UP! :chuckle:
