Packwood and Cinebar / Vail area.
It looked like a traffic jam with trucks and trailers last night!

Sumas Mountain

Uh Oh,,   :bash:   was thinking about going there myself.

I know a guy who road hunts Sumas mountain whose color blind.  No joke!  His wife won't let him hunt alone so he has someone to point out the orange for him.  Beware of the blue Chevy suburban.

I didn't go up there this morning,, went someplace else. I passed a few hunters/trucks, but not as many as I woulda thought. Funny thing,, when I was coming off the mountain to drop off the cowbell I brought with me, I passed a convoy of shiny Honda cars heading up the mountain,, nine in a line heading up there. Wonder what they were up to?

Yeah, I was there sort of.  I camped on Umptanum Ridge in a brush pile so I could be out there in them at daybreak and the push began.  I love to hunt the desert and when I've had success that's what I do, cold camp, but it has become a circus at least numbers wise. I think the number of hunters and the number of deer I saw were about equal, 30 plus, no legal bucks other than the one that some fellas on horseback shot one canyon over from where I was-I was headed for that spot and they got there about 15 minutes before I would have crossed over and dropped into that spot.   I could see the Observatory Road parking lot from where I was, pretty amazing.

Was in an area that was normally void of other hunters until this year and could usually always count on success. HOLY CRAP yesterday it looked like the whole area was full of moving pumpkins wasn't hunting more than a 100 acre area and saw 12 other hunters by noon, walking in pairs and just talking away as they moved along the deer trails, heard one pair of hunters better than 500 yards away as they were moving into the area. If you hunt like this do everyone else a favor and stay the hell home, because you sure as hell don't know how to hunt

Worst places to deer hunt this weekend

anywhere in the middle of a pumpkin patch

I watched a dandy 4 point buck escape a pumpkin patch in the Taneum many years ago. I heard a massive amount of shooting going on so I crested the hill to see what the commotion was all about on the other side. In the middle of the ravine was a nice 4 point slowly moving to the rim. Surrounding him was about one dozen hunters with buck fever. I don't know how many shots were fired at the buck but everyone seemed to empty their rifles more than twice. When the buck was cresting the hill, I assumed everyone was out of ammo because he passed only a few yards from several hunters and none of the fired a shot at that time. Everyone was under 200 yards from this nice buck too. I was probably no more than 250 yards and though I wanted to shoot it (and I knew I could hit it) I figured if I did, there would be 3 or more tags punched by the time I could get to it so I held back and just watched.
Funny thing is - not one of the hunters that shot at it followed it to see if there was a blood trail. They all went in opposite directions of the buck. I crossed over and followed the tracks for a few hundred yards and figured it had not been hit.
All told - I guessed well-over 100 shots were fired at the buck. It was his day to live.

Yacolt Burn. The last time I hunted there is was like a freeway trying to get in there. I was overlooking a clear cut once, and one guy pulled in above me another to my 9 O'clock and another to my 7. one of them about got a 7mm bullet in their minivan radiator! If you see someone on a clear cut move to the next one!
