That was not the bull, sucks to be that close and not get a shot. I hope your dad kills a pig, sounds like there is a few in there this year! Good luck Dave!!

Yeah, it was a bummer, but the only thing to do having seen that bull was to give it a shot.  I was the first (that we know of) to spot him, three days before season.  The guy who eventually killed him was glassing from the same point and so when I said "there's a bull" we both trained our spotting scopes on him.  After seeing him we both planning on going after him.  A few more people saw him in the coming days but they were always there with Spokane Dave and I, so we immediately outlined our plans for approaching the bull (there were only two reasonable routes into him).  One group respected that and went elsewhere on opening morning, the other went in the same way my dad and I did.  Fortunately we were there first and when the other hunter came along he was really cool about it and backed off.  But just about that time the other guy shot from his rock perch and it became a moot point.  This bull ended up being an 8x7.

From there my dad and I worked into the bottom where we got in between a couple bugling bulls and picked off a nice 7-point as he was moving in another bugling bull.  It's the biggest bull my dad's ever killed and, unfortunately, it was only 150 yards from the bottom (1700' below the road).

Am I wrong, but isn't a 600 yards kind of on the edge of unethical?
Old enough to know better.
Young enough to go for it.

He said he was comfortable to 500 and there was zero wind that day, so I don't think it was much of a stretch for him.  We knew going into the morning that he would be on that rock hoping to make the cross-canyon shot - our only hope was that it would be windy or the bull would be on the backside of the ridge.  Didn't work out that way so our bet didn't pay off.  No biggie - the guy who shot him was a good guy and we ended up getting a great story out of ours (had to get him in the timber midday, which involved a lot of strategy and careful tiptoeing).

Benchleg, nice bull!

if your prepared, no problem. Seen elk get dropped at 800 and 1,000 yards, but you must have the equipment and the knowledge. With my set up, and not a lot of practice- I've killed a small bear at 550. Whuppinstick, congrats on your dads bull!
