Conicals
« on: October 19, 2013, 01:58:38 PM »
Do any of you use conicals in muzzle loader season with the iron sights? Lee REALS, maxi's, mini's, buffalo's and the sort is what I referring to since they can be very productive at iron sight ranges. Not once have I heard of a bullet failure with the big lead conicals.

I use 460 grain Bull Shops - since we are required to shoot lead full bore conicals for ml season in Idaho...

They may loose some weight but they certainly do not blow up...

But then again, there are several regular bullets out there that will not blow up either...

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

I hunt with 425 grn maxi balls, and have never had any kind of failure. Even at 100 yards I  get great expansion and a complete pass through with a large exit wound " which I prefer". Never have to worry about lack of blood trail.

Hey Sabotloader,

Make sure you grease those bullets up with some bore butter.  As a side benefit, it will season the bore on that Ultralight for you. :chuckle:

and bring some identification when you buy it   :chuckle:

My dad uses buffalo conicals during MZ hunts and they certainly put the smack down.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Think I will stick with the NASA lube that Bull Shop Dan uses... it is good stuff and the only bore conditioner I need is the stuff from Montana X-Treme which is synthetic... :chuckle:

Buffalo's are excellent conicals... They use to be widely available but seem to be harder to find these days...

That bullshops 460 gr looks pretty good, basically a 50 cal semi wad cutter. Have you noticed the terminal performance in the different styles or weights of bullet or is it just the particular style of bullet, powder, lube combination that you found in YOUR gun that shot accurately? Most all of them are just basically 45, 50, 54, and 58 cal big hunks of soft alloy lead, but they do have different BC's for greater range. Greater range being defined in 25 yard increments in accordance with drop and wind.

I'd shoot big chunks of lead if I could (They just make sense)....but my wife...she don't want lead in the meat. :bdid:

So I shoot the largest heaviest copper or brass bullets I can find.  No expansion on the copper bullet this year, but the bull fell where he stood.

I use .451 in 460 grain from Daves No Excuses. Looks identical to that Bull Shop, just longer.

Do you need a special kind of muzzy to shoot conicals?

Can I shoot em out of my Kentucky 50....?

I've always just used 100 grains of 777 and a round ball w/ a musket cap.... I've been wanting to try out conicals/mini balls....

Late season opener is next week :whoo:
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.
Forget the bear spray, use wasp killer. Concentrated delivery stream, 10X the product, and only $3.00 on sale.

I smoke two fish in the morning, I smoke two fish at night, I smoke two fish in de afternoon makes me feel alright
