Coweeman??
« on: November 01, 2008, 12:29:27 PM »
Hey guys, ironicaly enough my dad and I got each other Muzzleloaders last year for Christmas. So we made plans to go down to Coweeman on the 19th to hunt for the late Muzzle Elk season. The only problem is casue of work (retail..busy season) neither of us have any time to scout any of it, but from looking at my Washington map I found two main roads that go into coweeman (rosevalley, and headquartes)...does anybody know if those are two good roads to start our hunt on?? Also I heard they have a lot of gates up so you cannot drive up and camp into, if true where do you camp? any came sites?..thanks guys any advice would be helpfull!

Headquarters road is the best way in. There is a state park you could camp at on Silver Lake (Seaquest). It is not far at all from the Headquarters road. Good luck.
One shot, one Deer. Two shots, maybe one Deer. Three shots, no Deer

Coweeman access would be through Headquarters,Ostrander,Rose Valley,or even the Kalama river or Spirit Lake Hwy,just be carefull to stay out of the Toutle. As far as gates go they have been pretty much opened this year,in years past they had been a pain, where you could actualy drive to both sides, but not through them.Camping is prohibited on Weyerhaeuser property, which is most of the Coweeman unit.As far as camping goes there is Seaquest as mentioned,or Silver Shores abit further up Spirt Lake Hwy.In the Kalama area there is Camp Kalama just off I-5 at the Kalama River exit. There are useualy a few campers towards the end of Headquarters road just off to the right at the 020 road, they set up camp just before the rail crossing, this is usualy during the modern season, not sure how popular the spot is during muzzle loader season. If you choose to hunt the Rose Valley area I believe you can camp along the road before you get to the Weyerhaeuser gate on the 1600 rd this is state land and there are a few pull outs wide enough for a trailer, the old CC camp is still there as well but the access has been trenched so it would be a tent camp only.

You can't camp along Rose Valley road.  Go in through Headquarters and camp at the other places mentioned.  It's the only option.

I'm not sure when Weyeco stopped the camping,in the 90's it was pretty much wide open.I myself have never camped along Rose Valley, but the stretch of road just before the Weyerhaeuser gate at the 1600 has always had trailers tucked into the pull offs in the past, this is well above the private areas with the cabins.

If you decide to camp along Spirit Lake Hyw(Seaquest or Silver Shores)then Headquarters road would be reached via South Silver Lake rd just down the hwy,or you can gain access through Sightly/Canal rds which have been open this year,or the 4700 line off the south fork Toutle(4100) which has also been open.

Wherever you dicide to stay or enter the unit at I would sugest picking up a Weyerhaeuser St Hellens West or St Hellens Tree Farm map
