Deer and Elk
« on: October 23, 2013, 07:01:58 AM »
I have been hunting an area and have been running into tons of Elk sign, but no deer. I was wondering, and I probably already know this, but do deer and elk share the same habitat areas? I am just wondering if I am not seeing any deer sign due to the concentration of elk in the area. If there are a lot of elk, will the deer move off to another spot? or ??  :dunno:

That seems to be very common.  They will of course mix some but I think typically they keep to their own kind.  I have noticed that it does not require alot of distance to flip flop where you will be in the deer but not elk.

I was hunting in an area last week and seen lots of elk and no deer, it was time to pack up and head out.

Been having the same problem, keep finding elk everywhere but few deer.  Have to try something different.  As soon as elk season starts I'll be in deer every day and no elk.  :bash:

Its actually a issue in several areas and other states as well. There have been several discussions on MM about it.

OK.........
So I'm driving out to my Dad's house today to sweep all the pine needles off his roof and hit it with that Moss killling stuff. He lives out in Graham.......Any Buck area.......He has 5 acres.....as most of the lots around there do.
ANYWAY......I come across Orting Kapowsin Highway......and 50 yrds from intersection.....standing in the ditch......doe and a spike.......ANY buck area.......closest buildings were maybe 100ft away.....RIGHT on the side of the road.......AND....there was a guy in a white Humvee# sitting there watching......I was thinking......DANG!.....either wish it would run across the road in front of me.....or WISH I had a Crossbow........BUTT.....it was a little spike, and the guy in the Hummer was most likely waiting for everyone to drive off and then Jump out with a bow and wackitt. :archery_smiley: So I decided to pass it up..... 8)

My experience the Deer and Elk don't mind each other until the elk rut when the bulls get pushy with everyone in the woods.  Deer seem more irritated then scared. :twocents:  By the way this is my first post.  Thanks for let me be a part of the group.  Very impressed with the site.

I have had the opposite happen in the very same areas.  Out after Elk and keep running into deer.  Deer and Elk droppings, tracks, rubs, right next to each other.  Especially on the Penninsula, SW.
