spotlights for boating to your hunting spot
« on: November 02, 2008, 12:30:03 AM »
anybody have recommendation for a good spotlight.  I tried the cabela's 20mil candlepower for driving my boat to the hunting spot and the battery life sucks.  they claim 45 minutes but it's more like 20.

i use the cabelas 20 mill spotlight, but we have a realativly short ride in and we only use it when launching, poulling up on shore, and intermittent use during the ride. I wired up some $20 cheapo driving lights into my 12v battery, mounted those on my boat, and mainly use those.

From reading posts by "watchmaker" on this board, I believe I'd go with one of the flashlights he recommends instead of a spotlight. They may be a little bit spendy but probably more than worth it for your purposes. Check out this thread:

super in depth, thanks,
I returned the 20 mil candlepower beast to cabelas and got a great, much smaller 534 lumen cabelas XPG, it's brighter, whiter and of course 140$ more.  awesome light though, wish I could afford that Borealis 1050, maybe after nursing school.

I got a 1 million from wal-mart with an internal LED so you can use the LED to conserve battery life.  The whole unit is rechargeable as well.  It isn't huge but it works just fine for us.  Plus it's only 20 bucks.

Additionally i'll have my buddy up front with the spotter and i'll be driving with a nice long maglite (3 d's) with the most constricted beam.

We've had to motor through some small channels and the set up works pretty darn good so far.
That's why it's called hunting and not killing.
