« on: November 01, 2013, 09:08:55 PM »
I found a new area that promising for late season. Was thinking about putting a treestand up. Anybody on here hunt blacktails out of treestands that could give me some advise on where to put one? (next to a cut, reprod, etc.) Thanks in advance!

Scout the area and find the travel corridors from bedding areas to feeding areas. Look for rub lines  find a area that funnels into a feeding area. Keep the wind direction in mind.

Look for edges, borders, corners, benches, ect.  Something that seperates two areas or terrain.  I have found most sign between alder thickets and old growth pines and between old growth and jack firs, especially if there is a bench in there.  Look at where these type of areas border clearcuts, and get in a little ways.  If lucky, you might find a staging area like this, where they come to before dark in preps to come into the clearcuts to feed.  Keep this in mind...BT are spooky, and nearly always have a "back door" where they travel.  Good luck!

Thanks guys! Went up today to poke around some more and scout. I think I may found an area that could be good for a stand. I put up a couple cameras to see what time of day their in there. Hopefully it will work out.

I hunt blackies in big timber out of a treestand during late archery.  Not a big fan of clear cuts, especially with a bow.

How do you deal with the scrub/brush?  I've found lots of sign in a few places, but none have been where I could get a clean shot.  I came across what I believe to be the first real rub I've ever found.  Most I could possibly back up from it I laser ranged at all of 8 yards...

Haha, yeah a tree works best.  :chuckle: :chuckle: I usually set mine up a little ways back away from the clearing or trail that I want to watch, far enough away to be concealed from the deer, but close enough to see and get a shot. And with a bow, you have gotta be pretty close in the thick country!  :IBCOOL:
