When using beaver and muskrat for bait are you freezing it and taking a little out at a time or keep it cool and let it get "louder"? I know fresh is best for mink (what about cats?) but there are times when it needs stored for a week or so.
I collected some castor mounds to be used later in different areas later this season. I bagged the mud in zip locks. Freeze them?
Thanks
Doug

For cats, I do not think fresh is best. I like a little taint on my bait. Maybe a week out of the freezer here on the west side where it is above freezing most of the time. After that week I think it can get pretty far gone and still be good. I do not subscribe to the idea of changing bait at a cat set once it gets real rotten. I have had too many baits that were literally running off the bone and had a cat come in and eat the bait.
I should add I don't like rats for cat bait but you use what you have.
Not so much experience with mink so I will let someone else chime in.

Del Kramer taught me to use rats for bait in the spring to catch both rats and mink. He also used smelt, pretty much what was available. If I had some I'd use inedible parts from ducks or other birds. Nothing beats beaver meat for bait.
