Nice Blacktail with my son along
« on: November 03, 2008, 02:06:15 PM »
Here's a nice 3 X 4 with double eye guards on his left and a broken single on his right. This is my sons (7 years old) third trip out with me this season. I got off work early Friday the 24th and picked him up at home then went to a close in little honey hole. We got up into the spot about 5 pm and were sitting there glassing and that inner voice said "you're set up wrong". So we moved to another area to watch a timber line on a cut. As we sat there watching and sharing small talk at 6:15 I spotted a doe coming out. I whispered to him that there was a doe right down there and to be still, quiet and watch closely. Within about 2 minutes this guy followed her out. I told my son "He's a shooter, cover your ears. About a 150 yd shot quartering towards me I put 1 in his ribs behind the right shoulder. My son whispered "Dad he's still standing". He had changed his position and was directly facing me. I put the next shot in his chest and he flipped straight backward and didn't move. My son looked at me with big o'l eyes and says "Dad that was awesome!". I said well he's not moving so let's make our way down to him before it gets completely dark. Took about 15 minutes to work our way to him. I have to say I have put some pretty good hikes on this boy this year and he hasn't complained once. He then helped me while I gutted it (held a leg and the light for me). It was a pretty good pull out, reached the truck about 9:30. Only about a 20 minute drive home and he was asleep before we got there. When we arrived home he popped up went in the house told his mom he was hungry and grabbed a pencil and paper and drew her out the the whole scene as it had played out in his eyes. Trees, stumps, deer movement and dotted lines for shots. This is the 1st deer I have taken with him beside me so he gets mounted just so these memories play back every time we will look up at him. Priceless.

He's 19" wide, didn't measure height but been asked enough so I'll put a tape to that tonight. Cabela's had a sale on digital scales so I picked one up and gutted he weighed 185. I've got what I concidered a few pretty nice BT racks but the widest of those is 14". That one is taller than this one though.

Thanks for all your comments everyone. It is fun to go home at night and share them with him. It's the 1st thing he wants to look at when I get home. Your comments here and your stories in other threads help to generate excitement in a new generation of young hunters. Also many of the ethical issues brought up in the forums open up great topics for him and I to discuss. He wants to do hunters ed for next year and I have told him I think he is ready and will take it with him as I'm sure I'll learn a thing or two or ten. We frequently walk our property looking for rabbits & squirrels and talk safety & ethics. He's a very cautious & thoughtful hunter. He is a pretty steady shot with both rifle and bow. As many of the fathers who have younger children have said, they can't wait to share memories like this. I will tell you it is exciting and gratifying to watch and be part of boy wanting to learn to become a hunter and outdoorsman. Now enough of the sentimental stuff let's see more big bucks!
