Put one down.
« on: November 11, 2013, 06:15:19 PM »
I hunted (modern) in GMU 136. Struck out with the deer but this guy thought 400 yards was safe from a redneck with a .30-06. First shot would have done the trick (165g NBT took out bottom of lung and probably damaged heart/liver) but I thought I clipped a leg and missed is torso so after he fell I put an anchor shot into the only patch of fur I could see behind the sagebrush.

Great job! How high did you have to hold for that 400 yard shot?

Thanks guy.

At 400 I just use the bottom taper point of the duplex reticle. Not exact but close enough.

about 32"...I know because I missed one at 400 because I miss judge distance...by a long shot 400 doesn't look very far on the east side :bash:

Maybe I'm misreading your post but at 400 yards the 165g NBT out of my .30-06 only drops 17.5". The bottom duplex that I use for aiming at that range is 16" below the intersection of the crosshairs (at that range). BTW I'm sighted in 3" high at 100 = 4" low at 300. 32" for my set up would be just shy of 500 yards.

Well I could be wrong I'm no expert but my calc using 150gr soft point says 31.7 with a 100yd zero and with your 165gr NBT around 34" now  with your scope idk what magnification your at or how your reticle is but with mine at 9x the bottom hash would be for about 600y

Yup I understand all the little things that go into making a difference at a given range. Just seemed low to me for a 150 but I've never shot them. Looking at some different loads now I see that you must be sighted pretty close to dead nuts on at 100. I wasn't thinking about a different zero at the time, just about how much drop at 400. Oh well one less song dog at least (dont worry I can admit I've shot over the backs and kicked up dirt in front of them with this gun too).
