WHERE ARE ALL THE ELK?
« on: November 03, 2008, 06:19:04 PM »
Just was wondering if any one else had the same problem finding elk this year in unit 340? Just got home from 10 days in unit 340 hunting elk and only saw 3 elk the entire week i was there. Lucky one of those 3 was a spike and he now is at the butcher!!!! I talked to a lot of hunters and it seemed it was the same story from them. I know a lot hunters with cow tags are going to be eating paper from the lack of elk in the unit.    >:(

340 is dead. i never seen a fresh track this year during archery season. and 90% of the people i talked to had the same to say.

my buddie just got back from up there and out of 7 guys in his camp they only seen 10 elk all togather in 12 days (that includes scouting days before the season)

I know 364/356 havent been truning out alot of elk either. My friend at work went up with 5 people during muz season and they all had cow tags, only 1 saw and elk and shot it. I had a hard time finding elk in 364 during early archery. :dunno:

8 of 10 Elk in that unit summer above 4000 feet. The back country is loaded. There are a few "walk in" areas down low we know that always hold elk. We have hunted it with all wepons for many years. This year was typical as to what I have seen recently but we took a cow during archery and the guys were on bulls every day and two 5 points during muzzy.....It is not a good general season unit unless we get mass snow during the season which has not happened for a while. I have seen some very big bulls within spittin distance from E-berg but only a few live there year round.......
