So as most stories go I hunted hard for 7 days put a totoal of 69.4 miles on according to the GPS. I saw lots of bulls and cows. pretty  much the norm except for the hot weather.  The real story begins the day before I got my elk. I was sitting in a little spot that overlooks this canyon and my buddy was on the otherside, he come over the radio to tell me there are two guys above me. Well I stand up so they can see me but they dont.. One guy walks down the hill in my direction and literally sits 20 yards from me. How he canot see me is amazing, I am wearing blaze orange and out in the open, What kind of hunter is this guy that he cant see orange? After about 5 minutes he looks my direction and just waves. continues to sit there for about 20 minutes and then leaves. I guess looking at the man he was a little large and it took him every ounce to get there and was just to tiired to move again. I waited around til pretty much it got dark and then headed back to camp.
On my way out I was just about to pass this man when he said " Don't you know this is a secret spot?" I just laughed .. he continued talking about how he was with this large group and that there was a 7 point they have been seeing down there, but did not want to push it til their buddy got here on Saturday.. Are you kidding me this guy draws a big bull tag in one of the most sought after units and is only going to hunt it for two days? man I have the maximum amount of points and would kill for that tag and you can bet i would spend everyday trying to fill it. Anyway he then continues to tell me there is a spike down there too.. OOps He let it slip..... I just said good night and headed out since I still had 2 miles to walk.
Needless to say my friends and I were back there in the morning. I sat where i could see pretty good til about 9 in the morning. Just as I decided to start getting up i saw movement to my left across the canyon. I watched 19 cows go by. Dang no spike, after they went into the burnt timber another heard came pouring over the hill 20 cows and 2 bulls.. No spike.. they also went into the timber. I started side hilling and looking into little holes of burnt trees, I could see them moving up canyon and signaled my friend they were coming. About 10 minutes go by and I can see them for but some reason they changed direction and were coming back the way they came. I hussled back where I saw an opening and before i could get ready I a see a bull.. A spike and he is in a hurry. How he got there I have no clue... I did not have time to range him but from doing it earlier i thought it was around 400. I put my .338 with burris scope on him and let it fly. He curled up like a baby then ran maybe 50 yards and dropped. I then had time to range him and he was 430yards  .. Well I guess I just wanted to thank that guy for the slip of the tounge And apologise because the big Bull along with some of his friends fled the county. That my 4th spike in 7 years and I cannot ait til I get drawn for the big one Oh yeah I have a good story about another big bull tag holder but will save that for another thread.
