Coon bait
« on: November 05, 2013, 08:23:29 PM »
I have some traps set out along the river bottom trying to catch coon or mink or whatever else will go in my trap. I have set on sign where I have seen tracks before. I am wondering what kinda bait or lures I should be using to boost my catch

Not an expert on coon or mink but I'll throw my 2 cents in anyway.

I have had best luck when along a stream like that with smoked salmon and a good dose of fish oil. I wouldn't expect you to run out and buy smoked salmon but something fishy and not rotten. Maybe salted fish scraps but you will need something for odor then. Thats where the fish oil came in and you can use it like a trailing scent. Don't have that? Whatever you can find with a sweet smell will help.
If it smells like you would eat it a coon will. I heard Rob Erickson has some lure out that smells like Kentucky Fried Chicken. :chuckle:

Mink: beaver, muskrat meat or fish, fresh or salted. Again with the fish oil
They have some stuff called JackMack (basically canned mackerel) See if they have any in the store. Lot of guys use it.

On a related note I think any you catch now will be blue.  Plenty time to order some lure or fish oil.
