Friggin' mink!
« on: November 10, 2013, 12:22:50 AM »
So, I'm sitting here typing a new thread and I hear the chickens squawking.  Go out to the coop and see three chickens on the ground.  They were not there earlier when I rounded up one wayward hen in the dark.  So, I look around the coop and there's a RIR part way out of a hole in the fence so I shut the flashlight off and sit quietly in the chicken poo with the .22 mag in my hands.

Scratch, scratch, shake, shake, light goes on, eyes look at me but I can't get a good focus at 12 feet with the scope, still there, BANG, runs off.  Shut the light off, hear the little bugger in the bushes, two hens run out of the coop, hear it back around the outside, flashlight on, eyes, body, BANG, runs off.   :bash:  Turn the light off, wait, wait, hear rustling in bushes, hear it walking over the old chicken food bag that the wind blew around behind the coop, rustle, rustle, trying to pull dead hen through the fence, light on, BANG, down the little SOB goes.  Lights off, wait, is there another one?  After a while, I see the one twitching and didn't hear any more, one more shot so it does not bite me when I pick it up.  I can see a neck shot.

Upon closer examination, it looks like I also hit it in the shoulder, also blood drops off the side of the coop where I heard it return from.  Dang tough SOBs to still come back after being hit once.

I guess I'd better fix that fence up better.  Man I hate this new PT wood, it ate right through my chicken wire where it was stapled to the wood.   >:(

Another crazy thing is, all of the outside lights were on tonight as we had company over for a good venison dinner, one regular neighbor and a new guy (from Turkey) for his first venison ever.  He loved it.

BTW, this little crapper managed to kill three of our hens.  At least one was a non-layer we were just being nice to in her retirement.

WOW sounds like you need to make a modified box/rat trap... didn't know the island had mink... Apparently you can't sleep either!  :chuckle:
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

When I butchered the hens, I discovered each one had their skull severed from the neck, inside the skin.  One of the hens outweighed this guy 4 to 1.
