Skagit cast and blast help - hunting with my Dad
« on: November 14, 2013, 09:53:50 AM »
Hey guys!   Here's the deal, My dad wants to go back to his old stomping grounds and hunt and fishnext weekend (Skagit area). He hasn't lived over there for 30 years.   I've lived on the east side my whole life.  He's pretty confident that we'll find fish.  I said I'll talk to my hunting buddies and see what I can drum up.  I'm struggling finding a simple place to duck hunt.  I've gotten some good advice on the famed island but my dad has bad knees and we don't have field decoys.  I've got five dozen water decoys, my dog and a 14ft 15hp boat.  I'm looking for a place we can motor boat to hunt from shore.  I'm not trying to steal anyone's spot. This will be a one time/weekend hunt and i won't share with anyone our location if you private message me general areas.
I know this is a long shot,  any advice is greatly appreciated.

God bless,
Brad

Ps we're planning to hunt next weekend Nov. 23/24

Launch from Skagit HQ.  Either go slightly up river to the quality hunt area but be careful tying your boat up on a big tide.  If you don't know the area well the QH area might be your best bet.  Get on Google Earth and check it out first so you can get a sense of the area; there are a few good areas back there especially with this resin; it should provide some holding water for ducks.

Good duck hunting out in those areas but like they said ...pay attention to the tide changes ...nothing to mess with if you have not been around it much !! also a lot of feel free to hunt areas this year but you best get up very early in the morning on a weekend !!!

All the rivers are running high and muddy.

Thanks everyone.   I've been trolling all over google earth.  Follow up question, I'm a dry sider so I don't know anything about salt hunting, how does the tide affect the birds?   When is the right time to be out?

When the tide goes out the whole bay gets really shallow.  When we were doing off season scouting, we were out a mile from shore in 1-2 ft. of water. Unless you have a jet, I would stay in the main channel down stream from the headquarters launch. If you feel confident enough to get out in the bay, I would keep close attention to the tides and try to only be out there when there's lots of water. (nothing harder on the knees then towing a boat through the mud)  PM me and I can offer some tips on decoying.  I think we will be out there Sat, or Sun as well.
